I like to check out charities using Charity Navigator, they have a lot of helpful information on their website.
They give “Wounded Warrior” three out of four stars, but the highest possible rating for accountability and transparency.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has a very similar rating from Charity Navigator.
It’s a handy tool because it breaks down exactly how the charities spend their money and what their policies are.
What it does NOT do is rate the worthiness of the cause – that is up to the donor to decide for themselves. All they do is rate them on how they handle their money and conduct themselves.

It certainly is something I look at, but I don’t usually make it a make-or-break for donating or not. The Red Cross is a big behemoth of an organization. It doesn’t surprise me that the top person there makes $600,000+. I don’t donate to them for a variety of reasons, that’s one of them. Generally, I prefer to give to smaller organizations.
For example: When the earthquake hit Haiti I got an email that day from a charity I support, “Feed My Starving Children.” They were already doing work in Haiti and while their warehouse had been damaged, they were still operational and immediately distributing nourishing meals to the survivors through their pre-existing network. So, I was able to donate to them that day, knowing that my money was going immediately to the survivors to feed them in the days and weeks after the disaster. I would never say giving to the Red Cross is wrong or not helpful, but there just isn’t that feeling of connection there (only my humble opinion). YMMV.
