As with most of us raised in the 50s and 60s, I was taught in public school. The Pledge of Allegiance, filmstrips, My Weekly Reader, Screen News Digest. American History and World History taught through the prism of teachers who were being told what to teach (and what NOT to teach) by local school boards. Kind of a Schoolhouse Rock kind of education. Many of them not having any real idea what they were teaching, some having just graduated recently themselves. My public school experience was very much like that of Theodore ‘Beaver’ Cleaver in the iconic television show, except we didn’t have to stand by our desks to answer questions.
But, with age sometimes comes wisdom. And unfortunately skepticism and cynicism. Looking daily at the electronic flotsam that crosses my computer, I can only come to one conclusion.
It was all a ruse.
Yes, in theory, we should live in a World where children, teachers and parents are polite, and respect each other. And government officials respond to the majority will of the people, while respecting the minority view.
As we were taught.
I developed this theory some years back, and daily exposure to Internet news, opinion and propaganda have only continued to enforce it. It doesn’t REALLY work that way.
Then, how DOES it work, you ask?
Well, first, there is an overlay much as described above. Perhaps initially the World DID work as advertised, and this overlay is the remnant of that. But underneath is the uber-machine.
Every group has a political agenda. It may be completely benign, as in a group whose mission it is to help children, or the poor. But soon reality sets in. And the group realizes the only way to accomplish their mission is to gain power. And, how do they do that? By petitioning the politicians, giving support, money, lobbying for their cause. And by taking these actions they become part of the uber-machine made up of all the other groups: The Catholic Church, The Mormon Church, The Boy Scouts, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, the NAACP, The ACLU, The NRA, The Communist Party of the U.S., Your PTA, La Cosa Nostra, ad infinitum, ad nauseum. The list is never ending, all appealing to the source of power for power, or money, or aid. And how perverted each group becomes is a function of how much money and power they acquire – AND how much they are separated from their original mission. Assuming their original mission WAS benign.(!?)
We’re a long way from Schoolhouse Rock, I’m afraid. All these groups are the ones vying for power and control from government, some legitimately, some under-the-table. And it’s this hidden machine we must guard against. To take our Nation and Constitutionally-mandated government back.
Read The Constitution and The Bill of Rights. The Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers. Recognize while we need to scale back the power of the Federal government, we need to scale back at the State and local level as well. And that all this uber-machine poisoning didn’t happen overnight. It’s going to take time, AND it’s going to be painful.
I’m reminded of President Washington’s Farewell Address, wherein he warned of the dangers inherent in forming political parties. And President Eisenhower’s Farewell Address, in which he warned of the military-industrial complex. 163 years apart, and both right on the money.
Begin legally dismantling the uber-machine, now! Or is it too late?
