George Lindsey, famous as Gomer’s cousin Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, dead at 83.
Well, baby boomers, we’ve lost another one. Another childhood icon, gone.
While I like(d) the Andy Griffith Show, Goober was never a favorite character with me. Just like Gomer, he was just too stupid. I did admire George Lindsey’s pre-Mayberry work, though.
Being an Alfred Hitchcock Hour fan, he stood out in three episodes as a fine character actor:
The Return of Verge Likens (with Peter Fonda), Bed of Roses (where he played a blackmailing taxi driver), and The Jar – a Ray Bradbury horror treatment.
Always type-cast as a county bumpkin, but obviously not that in real life. I love character actors. He will be missed. – Guffaw

I remember The Jar, that one was a beautiful example of dark humor, especially the last scene before they fade to black.

Posted by guffaw1952 | May 7, 2012, 6:39 amI’m just wondering when some goof is going to decide that they need to do a re-make of the Andy Williams Show, complete with 3-d and politically correct people.
