Springtime! For Maintenance! And…

I’ve not posted a gun post in a while.  Many gun rights posts, but not one about equipment, per se.

My duty, service pistol is a 1911 National Match slide over a Vega stainless steel frame, with Bomar sights, a Swenson ambidextrous safety, Micro bushing, all custom hand-fitted by a premier gunsmith and coated with Poly-T by Robbie Barkman (many years ago).

I’ve owned her since 1983, and probably put 15-20K rounds through her.  I change the recoil spring every 2-3000 rounds, and clean/lube her as needed.

But I’ve never done any other spring maintenance!

Do You?

Bob (a former PI boss and gun store boss) sold me her and is Mr. Be Prepared.  An Eagle Scout, he has pretty much all anyone needs in the way of parts and such.  And he has offered to drive to me 40 miles to change out the other springs in my 1911 !

What a guy!

I’m certain she’ll be up for another 20K rounds.\

I only hope I am…

:-)

  1. 1911s are quite happy just getting the recoil spring replaced.
The only time I’ve ever heard of anyone replacing a sear, plunger or mainspring was ‘just because’, they wanted a different style/brand or it got rusted.
I expect mine to last the life of the gun….unless I lose one doing a detail strip N clean.

  2. My 1911 is probably suffering mostly from lack o’ shooting, but I hope to remedy that, and soon. Meanwhile, kudos to Bob for helping out with transport!

  3. Had a Vega a few years ago. Worked great.
Did I shoot your .45 at GBR or at Kevins shoot once?
    I still remember that trigger.

The Four Rules

1. ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED.

2. NEVER POINT YOUR MUZZLE AT SOMETHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY.

3. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET AND YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT.

4. KNOW YOUR TARGET AND WHAT'S BEYOND.

FEAR

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." - Bene Gesserit, from Frank Herbert's Dune
