Murphy’s Law left a comment on my Presentation from Concealment post, suggesting as we know the position and outline of our CCW accoutrement, we know where to look and are therefore overly-concerned with our weapon printing through the clothes.
Because most folks wouldn’t notice.
(Hey, most folks are in permanent Condition White!)
He may have a point.
However, as a trained noticer observer, I remember immediately after the AZ CCW law was enacted, visiting the Scottsdale Fifth Avenue shops (a hoity toity shopping area) just as an exercise, to see what I could see.
I realize a number of folks had already been carrying concealed (without the benefit of law) and were therefore experienced and practiced at it, and some were new permit holders with new firearms and holsters, capable of behaving as though they has some kind of hip wedgie.
However, I did notice nine discretely armed individuals while walking the shops. Out of a couple hundred. In about three hours. No big wind flashes or anything like that. Just minor irritated adjustments and printing.
And, as I’ve been known (in the past) to sometimes carry where the government preferred I not, I prefer to maintain discretion. But, that’s just me.
No pressure.
Although daily carry isn't quite as common in Anchorage as it is in areas farther from this metro area, there are LOTS of firearms here. In winter, folks can have any number of layers of clothing, so printing isn't an issue. Summer is a little bit different, but it's still not as oh-my-gosh-it's-too-hot to wear layers. I looked at everyone for awhile, when I started carrying, and saw lots of evidence of (ahem) something under the shirts, but now I just watch hands.
@Rev. Paul – Thanks. I too, concentrate on hands. If there's nothing in 'em, they're less threatening.
There's no doubt in my mind that my government size and Commander sized 1911's EVER print under a t-shirt. NEVER!Ok, maybe sometimes. I don't carry on the job as I work in hospitals and as everyone knows, if you have a gun in a hospital you'll inevitably devolve into a bloodthirsty deranged killer almost instantly, so I can see the sense in that law. (ahem)Out and about, off the job, I don't worry about it too much. Maybe I should but after 5 years, there have been no issues. I still maintain the majority of folks are too busy yakking on cell phones or ignoring their holy terror children in the store.I 'spose though, a trained noticer would eventually discern something.
