Fill Yer Hands recently blogged regarding a minor phenomena I’ve seen more and more of.  And, frankly, have heard about for years.

You’re a gun owner – why don’t you join the NRA or the SAF or some other pro-rights organization and put your money-where-your-mouth is?

Because I don’t want to be on a list.

You think that mouthing off in your local watering hole about the President or his policies, or buying firearms and ammunition, or prepping, or posting comments on the Internet haven’t already gotten someone’s attention?

It’s been widely reported that the ‘temporary’ NICS background check files have been (illegally) saved by the FBI, and every time a licensed gun shop goes under, they are required to ship all their filed Federal Forms 4473 to the BATFE.  We suspect there’s a huge database, although we’ve no positive proof.

How about the DHS Watch Lists when flying, or taking a train, or traveling abroad?  Or the NSA monitoring all the email traffic electronically, looking for key words like ‘guns’ in messages?

Personally, I suspect there has always been a list, and I involuntarily was added to it upon my first ‘papered’ firearm purchase.  And my ranting in this blog (and as a commenter on other blogs) about libertarianism, the Constitution, Gun Rights, Civil Liberties and various government abuses probably has made my file thicker.

But, I don’t care.  Why?  If indeed there are concerted efforts to monitor the actions and locations of possible threats (e.g. gun owners and free-thinking people) I’m probably at the head of the line.  Not only am I a gun owner and speak out about it, I’ve spoken publicly about the JFK assassination.

If there indeed IS a list, and we as a nation cross the Rubicon, I’ll never make to the camps…

(quietly removes tin-foil hat and skulks away…)

  1. If you aren’t on a list, you are doing it wrong.

  2. In this day and age anyone that thinks they are off the radar are sadly mistaken, everyone either needs to get involved. as the saying goes “If not me, then who?”
But those who will not partake in the fight, have no reason to whine if we are not the victors, and hope they remember when they point their finger at the NRA there will be 3 pointing back at them, NRA, GOA, SAF are no stronger than their membership

  3. If you have a CCW, trust me you ARE on a list… maybe more than one…

  4. The list(s) may eventually become useless: the larger it is, the more cumbersome it becomes for general government thuggery. It’s more likely they’ll target a few high-profile gun owners, hoping to intimidate everyone else.

  5. I’m on every list the goons have, I suspect. Been avtive since about 1960… Not relevant. But I will have nothing to do with the NRA any longer.
NRA: Another Dangerous Flip-Flop on Gun-Free School Zones
    Written by William F. Jasper

As reported here previously, on December 21 the National Rifle Association broke its week-long silence regarding the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. At a press conference, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre (pictured), the most visible spokesman for the organization, took aim and blasted away at the federally imposed Gun-Free School Zones Act (first passed in 1990 and revised in 1995). Mr. LaPierre declared that nobody “has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now, starting today, in a way that we know works?”

    LaPierre continued:

The only way to answer that question is to face up to the truth. Politicians pass laws for Gun-Free School Zones. They issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them.

And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk.

The politically correct (but fatally wrong-headed) Gun-Free School Zones are an easy and appropriate target. However, in the interest of full disclosure, Mr. LaPierre should have reminded his listeners that only a few years ago he and the NRA were major backers of the Gun-Free School Zones. Yes, it will surprise many Americans, including many NRA members, to learn that LaPierre testified in favor of the Gun-Free School Zones he now decries, when President Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno were pushing their ambitious attacks on the 2nd Amendment.

Here is what LaPierre said, on behalf of the NRA, when testifying on May 27, 1999, before the Subcommittee on Crime of the House Judiciary Committee:

We think it’s reasonable to support the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act. What’s unreasonable is letting 6,000 students caught with illegal guns at school go, prosecuting only 13 of them the past two years.

In addition, at the same time, the NRA also supported a vast expansion of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

  6. Old adage I live by. “Better to die on your feet, than live on your knees”. ^%#* them, and all their lists.

  7. If the government does have lists and begins it’s war an freedom by rounding up the most patriotic among us, I will be deeply ashamed if they do not come to my house first.

  8. I’m sure I’m on the list, after all I am a vet. Apparently that makes me a right wing terrorist as well. The rest is just icing.

  9. It sounds like there are records of the NCIS checks. Even then it would take a whole lot of effort to send somebody to each store where Joe Smith’s name was called in from to ask them for the paperwork then come back in a few days to pick it up. Honestly if the proverbial eye of mordor is focused on someone to that degree they are SOL anyway.

Still for reasons I cannot entirely explain haven’t made an FFL purchase in awhile and do not plan to. All private party for this guy.
