AZ: Teen Fatally Shot in Possible Home Invasion Identified

Authorities have identified 19-year-old Matthew Sykora of Yuma as the teen who came across an armed homeowner in the middle of the night during a possible home invasion.Yuma County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to the home in the area of S. Avenue D and County 14th at 1:22 a.m. to find the Yuma teen dead from a single gunshot wound.Sheriff deputies said the homeowner called 911 to report being woken up after hearing sounds in the home.

The homeowner has not been named.

Records show, this was not the teen’s first time in trouble with the law; in January of 2012, Sykora was charged with felony counts of theft and fraudulent schemes.

  1. My wife is from Yuma. I’ve always like the desert and maybe someday I will move back. She recognized the name. She went to school with some people with the same last name back in the 70’s.

Once again someone proves “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”.

    • Wow. Small town, indeed! I like the desert (now this 110 is a bit much) but don’t want to live anywhere else.
I’ve a friend who used to do radio in Yuma and taught at the community college. And a stepnephew who used to live there, and is now the media flak for the Border Patrol.
Been there and passed through numerous times. I’ll stay in Tempe.

      • I knew a radio personality in Yuma also. Dan Clancy on KBLU. I was there in the mid 60’s. for about 3 years.

      • Not the same guy. This guy was in the early 80s.

Yuma must be a breeding ground for radio personalities, eh?

  3. I’m always torn in these situations – the part of me that recognizes the worth of a human life has trouble getting past “I’m sorry you were fatally stupid.”
