Even Lenny Bruce Would Be Offended!

Weer’d World brings us news of a racially-charged incident.

Apparently, while Black folk are allowed (and even encouraged) to use the N Word as a term of affection and endearment, Other-Than-Black folk so doing are considered RACIST!.

NOW, this has been raised a notch, as a Black Woman took her Black boss to court over use of such language in the workplace.  And won.

$250,000.00  !!! in compensatory damages.

The jury returns Tuesday next to decide PUNITIVE DAMAGES !! 

Lenny Bruce was a standup comedian in the early 60s who was essentially the first ‘shock jock’.  He was (in)famous for coming out on stage and spewing a litany of foul epithets, including the ‘word’ N*GGER.

He explained in interviews that in so doing, he was a attempting to desensitize use of such language, to render it’s harm meaningless.

Obviously, his screed didn’t work.  Now even Black people can offend other Black people, and pay for doing so financially.

Now, while I don’t support hurtful language, I do support The First Amendment.  And, surprisingly, common sense and courtesy.

Let’s all keep our tongues civil, shall we?  Especially in the workplace.

If Lenny hadn’t died of a heroin overdose in 1966, perhaps we wouldn’t have such goings-on.

  1. Interesting food for thought…..
    Without more details, it’s hard to give an opinion on the lawsuit you mention. If the environment is hostile, it really doesn’t matter what epithets are thrown around.
    Like you said, it’s a matter of civility, not language.

    When it comes to the “N-word”, my personal example is Richard Pryor. He began his career by using it, thinking he could “own” it and remove the stigma.
    A visit to Africa profoundly changed him. There he saw African history and the present day, people who lived their lives and worked their jobs in an environment of pride and self-reliance. Pryor saw then the history of using the “N-word” as a way of separating and sub-humanizing black folks in America, keeping them feeling “different” and :”inferior”. He saw that history and context matter. He decided that the potential cost of “owning” the “N-word” was not worth the possible risks.
    His story spoke to me, so I follow his example.

  2. Possibly we have reached a new level of equality. No one should use that word.Boss appears to have suffered due to poor judgment.

  3. Civility in the workplace is sadly lacking, many times. What someone says to a friend in private is entirely different. Either way, though, that’s a word that probably ought to disappear from the language.
