We Need More Information…

Theo Spark presents us with the following graphic:

As one of his commenters mentioned, a third map showing the density of legal gun ownership would also put some light on the subject.

But, what do WE know?

  3. This doesn’t show causation. It shows a correlation. The fact that rural areas tend to vote republican and have lower crime rates has to do with a slew of geographic, socioeconomic, and demographic conditions that largely if not entirely exist independent of gun ownership. High rates of gun ownership in rural America is partially due to cultural heritage, partially to modern fear mongering; but it is not meaningfully connected to pragmatic or systematically intelligible efforts on the part of owners to deter crime. Gun ownership may give individuals a feeling of protection, but those impressions are largely baseless and inflated, as most rural gun owners are unlikely to ever find themselves in circumstances that would require a gun to be used in self defense. That would be the case whether they owned/carried guns or not. Thus these maps do not provide an argument in favor of gun ownership as a means of reducing crime rates.
