Happy New Year! – President Signs NDAA 2014! We Continue To Get…

(insert euphemism for sexual insertion HERE)…and without having ever been kissed!

The House and Senate quietly passed it AGAIN, then The President signed it, AGAIN!

Not only is Gitmo not closed, but indefinite detention of American Citizens for ‘National Security’ purposes continues to be authorized!

The 2014 NDAA also includes a new provision that appears to bolster the national security surveillance state. Section 1071(a) authorizes the Defense Department to “establish a center to be known as the ‘Conflict Records Research Center’.” Using the dangerously broad terms now typical of national security policy parlance, the Conflict Records Research Center enables the DoD to compile a “digital research database including translations and to facilitate research and analysis of records captured from countries, organizations, and individuals, now or once hostile to the United States.” Who gets to be a surveillance target — the specific remit of “now or once hostile” — is troublingly ill-defined and unrestricted.

Quelle surprise.

  1. Hm-mm-mm…

Great Britain and Canada were both once hostile to the US. They’re on the list.
Mexico always has been (and vice-versa). They’ve never been off the list.
I don’t believe Australia’s ever been a problem … but you never know about Aussies. Better put them on the list.

No one else even pretends to like us; put them on the list.

Then there’s the Whiskey Rebellion … and the late, semi-ongoing unpleasantness with “them folks down South (across the river there) … and other lesser known issues with Americans. Don’t forget to put Americans on the list.

Matter of fact, we hates everyone, everyone hates us. Let’s put us on the list as well.

If everyone is being watched, who does the watching?

Is it only the temporary, out-sourced, non-furloughed contractors of the moment that actually watch?
Do they get watched when they’re not watching?

Don’t forget, every serious “traitor” and spy/field agent (term depends on who they work for) has obtained a security clearance or three. Better watch the watchers …

  2. I wonder when things get done on the quiet… Usually doesn’t bode well for us…
