False Positives

Most of the anti-gun-rights crowd insists we need MORE and BETTER background checks.  Because, after all, the background checks currently foisted upon us by the BATFE (aka NICS checks) are so accurate and efficient!

We will admit background checks are a joke. Mass shooters Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), James Holmes (Aurora), Jared Loughner (Tucson), Aaron Alexis (Navy Yard), Paul Ciancia (LAX airport) and Stephen Phillip Kazmierczak (Northern Illinois University) sailed through them.  (National Gun Victims Action Council)

Hey we can agree with that! Background checks are a joke. Not only do these high profile killers sail right through them, but most of the NICS denials are false positives.  (Weer’d World)

So, if we pass just one more law…

Haven’t they said that for 90 years, now?  Just one more…

Yeah, THAT’S the ticket!

ticketAnd personally, I dislike HATE having my rights filtered!  With the very small exceptions of libel, slander, and yelling fire in a crowded theater (or “Hi Jack!” in an airport) people can say pretty much anything they want.  And aren’t Mein Kampf and Das Kapital hate speech?  Where are the controls on the First Amendment? OH, that’s right!  The Left LOVES the First Amendment.

Unless it violates political correctness.

“We Don’t Have Time For This!”

Two North Carolina parents are in shock after local police shot and killed their 18-year-old son in their own home, while they watched helplessly.

The family called police because they were worried about their son, Keith Vidal, who is schizophrenic and suffers from depression, according to local news. Vidal, armed with a small screwdriver, was apparently having a psychotic episode. Mark Wilsey, Vidal’s father, called the authorities to help deal with the situation.

An officer from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and another from the Boiling Spring Lakes police department showed up to the house soon after. Eventually, a third officer from the Southport police department entered the home as well, and ordered the use of tasers to subdue Vidal. According to Wilsey, Vidal was pinned on the ground by two of the officers when a third said, “we don’t have time for this,” and shot Vidal, killing him.

Vidal had just turned 18, and weighed a mere 90 pounds. He couldn’t have hurt anyone with the screwdriver, and had no history of violence according to family and friends.  (The Daily Caller)

Now, of course, none of us were there, and we weren’t the responding officers.  HOWEVER, while my tendency is to support law enforcement, this appears lazy, at best.  And it’s not the best.

What do YOU think?

Statistics (insert snoring sounds here…)

The Whited Sepulchre often brings us tables of a statistical nature, but unlike dry statistics, they are oft nourished with the cream of truth!  To wit…

How freakin’ huge is your share of what Obama is spending?  If you’re a smart person and not even bothering to work any more, your share of the government’s fifty-year spending spree is only around $50,000.00.  If you’re one of the dwindling number of net taxpayers, your share is around $100,000.00.

Would you like to turn back the clock and make a few changes in this?  (BTW, the debt is now close to 17 trillion.  Remember the good old days shown here, when it was only 10 trillion?)

Let’s move on.  would you like to earn a dollar and be able to keep the dollar for longer than a few minutes without it losing value?

The Federal Reserve was given the job of stabilizing the money supply way back in 1913.  Here’s what has happened to the value of a dollar (as determined by the money supply) since 1971.  The red line represents the inflation rate – AKA the increase money supply.

Want to invent a time machine, turn back the clock, and for the sake of everyone on a fixed income tell Tricky Dicky Nixon  to leave us on the gold standard?

Let’s move on to Nixon’s dirty little War On Drugs, and what it’s done to the incarceration rate.  (BTW, a white woman has a one in 111 chance of going to jail at some point in her life.  But for a black dude, it’s a one in 3 chance.)

Want to turn back the clock and convince Nixon that his War On Drugs is a bad idea?  Or is wanting to turn back the clock, under any circumstances, a sign that someone is a racist reactionary?

Has it worked?
No.
Are we going to keep doing it?
Well, do Barack and the Democrats rely on Narc, Jailer, DEA, Homeland Security, Torturer, Prison Contractor and Police Force votes to get elected?
Yes.
That’s why we’re going to keep doing this crap.

“Lions and Tigers and Software, Oh My!”

lionsWhen, oh when, will computers (and software) develop to the point they can behave like older electronics, e.g. TVs, stereos and such?

Obviously, the goal is to turn on the computer (or awaken it) and have it go to the correct page, and do what is asked for it to do, not unlike turning on the TV and having Edmus Scary’s Late Nite Horror Show with Plan 9 From Outer Space showing, as one intended.

If you’ve been reading me for over a month, seek professional help. you know I’ve been having issues with browsers and such.  I finally found one that seems to work, and have added security and malware programs, and things have been better, BUT…

NOW, I find I cannot post comments on BLOGGER-based blogs certain BLOGGER-based blogs!  I do the set-up, my identifiers, hit enter and poof – the posts magically disappear!

I’m having ‘issues’ with three or four blogs, but the most difficult is one of my daily readers, who comments on GiA almost daily, Rev. Paul of Way Up North.  It’s most distressing and embarrassing as he is not just a fellow blogwriter, but a friend!  Apologies to another friend, Lagniappe’s Lair (Murphy’s Law) as well, for the same issues!

If you’ve not seen a comment from me as of late, and use Blogger, THIS is why!

I’ve had problems with BLOGGER, before.  It’s why I now blog on WordPress.

Ah, BLOGGER, my old friend, I’ll chase him ’round the moons of Nibia and ’round the Antares Maelstrom and ’round perdition’s flames…no, that’s not it…

I’m using Comodo IceDragon as a browser; Windows 7 Home Premium, WordPress as a blog publisher; security by Malwarebytes, Comodo, Kasparsky, and Windows.  Add-ons include DoNotTrackMe, Ghostery, and PrivDog.  Any suggestions?

Anyone else having ‘issues’ posting comments on specific Blogger accounts?

Happy Birthday, Joe!

Today is my Big Bro’s Birthday!  Happy Birthday, Joe!

joeAs he is 12 years my senior, we never bonded as siblings very much.  My Dad married my Stepmother and we moved into her house with her almost grown children. (I’ve also a stepsister, Karen, who lives with her retired Army LTC in Alaska.  I’ve written of him in these pages.)

He, much like my Father was, is a sports nut.  I don’t think he’s as obsessed as my Father was, though.  He’s always kept in shape, and looks great considering his age.  I’m certain that’s because he still plays sports and is very active.  He spends Summers back in Illinois at a relative’s place ‘working the farm’.

Not exactly a Summer a couch-potato like myself aspires to!

He followed his Mother into elementary education, and retired a few years ago after years of teaching the 6th Grade, predominately Math.  Had to have been a labor of love, right?

I’ll always be grateful to him.  When we moved into my Stepmother’s home, everyone had to double-up.  My sister’s shared a room, and my brother and I shared a room.  As a newly-minted Third Grader I liked it.  I cannot image my college man brother appreciating it, though!

But, he never complained, at least to me.  We spent many a Friday night watching TV together (Friday Night in 1960-61 was replete with Westerns!) and sharing a bag of potato chips.

And he spent many of the past twenty years caring for his mother in her declining years.  I admire him for his selflessness.

Happy Birthday, Joe!

Keep Your Laws Off…

Would you rather sip on unpasteurized milk or a cold glass of soda? Do you prefer Saturday lunch at a fast food joint or a farmers market?

Regardless of your choices, your food freedom — your right to grow, raise, produce, buy, sell, share, cook, eat, and drink the foods you want — is under attack. Here are ten food freedom issues to keep an eye on in 2014.  (Fox News)

There’s the usual – trans fat ban, large soda ban, mandatory calorie reporting, etc. It never ceases to amaze me that the same party that so successfully courts the pro-choice vote and the LGBT vote with the concept of keeping government out of the bedroom can get away with telling us what we can or can’t put into our bodies in the dining room or kitchen.

One of the little-reported bits in the ACA is that vending machine companies are going to have to list the nutritional information on everything sold in each vending machine. Naturally, every single thing sold inside the vending machine already has a label listing the nutritional information, but the ACA requires it be on the outside of the machine. Because, you know, someone might think that a Twinkie or  Snickers bar is health food before they buy it.

I hate to break it to the food Nazis, but people eat stuff that’s not good for them. No matter how many places you post the caloric content, people are still going to cram Big Macs, powdered donuts, and chocolate bars down their gullets. You’re not going to stop it with a label, or with fifty labels. And if you think the backlash on guns is bad, just wait until you try to take away junk food.

Why does “keep your laws off my body/out of the bedroom” get turned into “Sure, make laws about what I can or can’t eat,” by the same group, without notice or uproar?  (Jay G.)

Right On! Jay G.!

I love how some folks protest for their rights to be let alone, but demand others fall in line.  I’m thinking, at a minimum inconsistency, but in reality hypocrisy.

PS – this new communist clown in NYC makes the last one look libertarian!  Seriously!

Government ‘Help’, Yet, Again

Magnifying glass locating spyware in computer code

According to new reports, the NSA may be intercepting electronics, including laptops and computers purchased online, to install spyware and other malware before the devices are delivered.

A new report from Der Spiegel about the National Security Agency’s top team of hackers says that the agency is intercepting electronics purchased online to install malware and spyware on them before final delivery to the consumer.

I almost put my ironic Captain Renault ‘Shocked’ logo here, but, its becoming both sad and redundant.

Who’s watching the watchers, when they are watching us?  And WHY are they watching us?

The saddest part of this post is I’m no longer shocked, or fearful.  I’m just disappointed and angry. – Guffaw

“THIS is my Castle – This is my Moat.”

“This is my rifle; this is my gun…”

Your Campsite is your “Castle” . . .

. . . at least in Oregon

The Oregon Court of Appeals has reversed the conviction of a man found guilty of illegally carrying a concealed weapon after he argued the campsite where he pitched his tent for the week was his home and provided an exception to the state’s concealed weapon law.

Murphy’s Law Makes Me SAD!

Not him, personally.  He’s a great friend!  But, he recently left a comment on Rev. Paul’s (another great friend) Way Up North that set me off.

Murphy was commenting on the state of education in these United States.

All my nephew knows about World War Two is that we locked the Japanese Americans in camps and dropped atom bombs on Japan. But a girl in one of my college classes back in the day did one better. I was telling her and some other students that I’d just come back from a motorcycle trip through Montana, and she asked where that was. I told her what states were around it and she didn’t know where those were, either. In COLLEGE. And it turned out that before I talked to her, she did not know that Montana was a state. IN COLLEGE. Schools today don’t want to fail the precious little snowflakes so they pass the dumb ones on, education not included.

And I was reminded they no longer teach cursive handwriting, geography and real history in public school, anymore!  We used to be (when I was a kid) tops in math and science – but no more.

Is this simply an accident of Fate?  I doubt it.  I suspect THE GREAT RIGHT-WING CONSPIRACY a greater left-wing conspiracy is at the helm.  Think about it.  The Fabians have always taken the long view with regard to the socialist utopia they wanted to foist upon us.  That’s why (and how) it works!  H.G. Wells, G.B. Shaw and company believed they knew better, and sought to evolve socialist ideals generationally.  This is why the guff that was largely dismissed by younger generations 60 years ago is now being embraced by today’s youth.  And with modern technology literally in their pocket, they can be nudged in whatever direction ‘the powers that be’ deem appropriate.

Can’t spell?  Doesn’t matter – you have spel-chek.  Didn’t read the assignment?  You have Wikipedia, which the classmate next to you wrote.  Can’t do long-division?  You have a calculator.  Can’t cook?  You have a microwave.  Can’t shoot?  Doesn’t matter – the government will protect you.  Believe in AGW climate change?  The IPCC (who trumpted it’s praises for years) dismissed it due to recent findings, but no one paid attention to those details.  It’s all about the agenda.

Can’t think critically, or accept new, contradictory data without dismissing it because it doesn’t conform to the forgone conclusion?  Yes, it’s true.  You are one of Lenin’s useful idiots.
