More From The ‘Formerly Great’ Britain

knives UKThey got rid of most civilian guns in 1997; apparently now, there’s some kind of ‘problem’ involving knives.  (Self-stabbings?)  Obviously, the suggestion here is one is more likely to be stabbed with one’s own knife, then to use it in self defense.  (Gee, where have I heard THAT argument, before?)  Of course, self-defense in and of itself is a problematic issue there.  I understand glass beer mugs are being replaced with polycarbonate ones (less heft, worse weapon) as well.  And plastic knives in restaurants!

From the Nation that brought us Sandhurst, Lee Enfield, Webley-Fosbery, and all manner of shotguns.

  1. Two years ago, when traveling through England & Scotland, we did not encounter any plastic beer glasses. And trust me, my husband had a beer every single meal (except breakfast)!
We also stopped for just a beer quite a number of times if we just wanted to take a 20 minute break or so.

Maybe a few really rowdy establishments might go plastic – to save on breakage as much as anything else, I’d imagine – but it would never fly with the British public at large. People who care about beer will NOT drink it out of plastic. And one thing I found out in England (even more than Scotland) is that they REALLY love beer. Not just as a drink, but as a craft and an experience.

All I can say about the knife issue is that I don’t remember seeing any such posters, but obviously this could be a new campaign since then.

    • Obviously, a lot has happened in the past two years. I don’t know if the plastic beer glass is just ‘suggested’ by the authorities, or actually has force of law.
The overall message of the post is about not just (potential) weapon control, but control overall. And the demise of a once proud firearms tradition.

  2. Well I guess now the Islamic extremists that they are allowing to take over their country will have to gnaw off the heads of their prey.

The formerly “Great Britain” has been replaced by shrill politicians trying to legislate themselves a Utopia. Sad…

  3. I was ‘told’ they are confiscating knives from visitors on arrival… Don’t know that for a fact, as I haven’t been there in 3 years.

  4. Off topic, but the ‘Disco Tent’ made me guffaw.
