The Art of Manliness blog is my go-to place for such esoteric knowledge as how to dress, conceal a weapon or wrestle. IOW, manly things! 🙂
Being mostly disabled since age 12, physical pursuits were largely left behind to childhood. And now damn near elderly and infirmed, the idea of participating in COMBAT seems laughable.
But, in today’s political climate, with conflicts developing between States and the federal government, who knows?
At least I know how to shoot!
For those of you (like me) who never made it to the U.S. military, AoM offers a taste of what is required for combat readiness.
If social order ever breaks down where this is necessary, I suspect I will be holed-up somewhere making tin foil hats and praying. Leaving only to forage for stores I cannot make – like fresh water and TP!
For the rest of you…
My dear friend Bob Hall passed away February last. He had suffered complications from diabetes (first losing a big toe, then the lower half of a leg), then ultimately acid reflux lead to GERD, and then esophageal cancer. The last few months of his life, he was eating through a feeding tube. Lost half his weight, and was fighting pneumonia which finally took him.
I had known Bob, first as my investigation boss at Tom Ezell & Associates; later as my boss at Legendary Guns of the West (where I worked part-time), since 1981. More than being a boss, he was a dear friend. We saw each other through the stuff of life. I’ve a stepbrother – Bob and I are much closer.
He was always honest and true to me. His trademark was nothing is so serious that a joke cannot be made about it. Irreverent humor – Firesign Theatre and Monty Python quotes were often exchanged between us.
He was a crack shot and loved to go ‘to the desert’ to go shooting. Even in his final days, using a walker. And he passed his love of guns and The Second Amendment to his wife and daughters.
He didn’t want a somber funeral.
I heard from one of his daughters that this Saturday (yesterday) was to be his memorial celebration. A caravan of his friends and family went to the desert to one of his favorite shooting spots, did some eating, shooting, then spread his ashes.
Bob’s favorite things, family, shooting and grilling – combined!
I was honored to have been invited, and was honored to bring and shoot my 1911 – a National Match slide on a Vega frame, with lowered Bomar sights, a Micro bushing, and Swenson ambidextrous safety, hand-fitted by gunsmith Burke Hill. Which Bob sold to me in 1983.
I dubbed her The Bob Hall Signature Model. My roommate calls her Bobbie.
It’s been probably 20K rounds, and except for occasional cleaning, lube and replacing the recoil spring @ 3000 rounds, not much has changed. She remains a tack driver.
Essentially a race gun (c) 1977.
And she is my companion when the Phoenix weather permits.
Bob sold her to me for a pittance. He never profited from guns he sold to friends. And I had to make payments to him, I was so poor! (having been a new father at the time.)
It’s only fitting I take her to what Bob called Burro Town to shoot her one more time.
So, about eighteen of us gathered yesterday. Did some shooting – ate BBQ chicken with all the fixings. (including cherry cheesecake – Bob’s favorite!)
Then, we stood in a circle and shared memories of Bob. There was tears and laughter. Then Anita (Bob’s wife) asked those who wish to to take some of Bob’s ashes and place them about Burro Town*.
Then, we shot a simultaneous volley in his name. All of us using guns once owned by him!
This is the photo the family chose to place on the food table. Bob hated having his picture taken.
(*It was named Burro Town by Bob, due to the wild burros that wander the region. Usually, we see a few. Yesterday, they were absent.)
But we who loved him were there.
That’s what we called them in Junior High.
When I became an ‘adult’, and was ‘on the street’ (as a P.I.), the phrase bandied about by street cops, court folks, prosecutors, attorneys, and yes, other federal agents was:
“F****** Bad Investigators!”
I used to have the utmost respect for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In spite of the political crimes, COINTELPRO, black-bag jobs, and J. Edgar’s dress.
In another life, I was taught and qualified to take, read and classify fingerprints. By a retired FBI agent!
I’d often thought (in the pre-CCW, Constitutional Carry world) that the way to carry a concealed weapon legally was to become a fed. (!) That way, one could go just about everywhere armed. How cool would THAT be?
But, then we had Ruby Ridge. Waco. And in the post-Hoover era things have NOT improved.
Witness this latest nonsense.
Because BLM, pipeline protests, post-election riots, yadda yadda aren’t yet doing it?
Do you think President Trump will allow SEVEN major metropolitan areas to openly flaunt federal law?
Or send in the National Guard?
(OR, will he just let them fester in the increased crime from undocumented folks who suck at the government teats until they are dry?)
Time will tell, I guess.
(It does look like a good starting point to find and collect the (up to) three million illegal aliens he wants to deport, though?)
Hey look, they are spread about the country!
It’s been said, politics makes strange bedfellows. I’m not a fan of this guy, but, if he can make a living spewing juvenile, naughty drivel on pay-to-play radio – so be it.
I’ve no idea (nor do I particularly care) about his other political views, but this did appear on my radar…
Of course, being the libertine he pretends to be on radio would normally attract the LEFT (progressives, democrats, etc.) but I suspect this throws them for a loop…
(from Free North Carolina)
Howard Stern applauded President-elect Donald Trump’s policy which would give concealed carry permit holders from every state the right to carry legally in any other state Tuesday on his SiriusXM radio show.
During his campaign, Trump told his supporters he believed in the right to concealed carry of firearms for eligible citizens and talked about supporting a national reciprocity policy for all legal concealed carry holders across the United States.
Privacy mavens have been going on for some time regarding the complete lack of privacy on the Internet. Coupled with private industry and public intelligence, license plate readers and facial recognition software, the NSA listening to our cellular telephone calls and reading our email, and cameras everywhere, from about 2002, lets face it…
Now, another factor has entered the arena.
According to Motherboard, it’s a real threat.
A global conference of senior military and intelligence officials taking place in London this week reveals how governments increasingly view social media as “a new front in warfare” and a tool for the Armed Forces.
The overriding theme of the event is the need to exploit social media as a source of intelligence on civilian populations and enemies; as well as a propaganda medium to influence public opinion.
. . .
The event, the Sixth Annual Conference on Social Media Within the Defence and Military Sector, is sponsored by the Thales Group, the tenth largest defense company in the world, which is partially owned by the French government.
Participants in the conference—chaired by Steven Mehringer, Head of Communication Services at NATO—will include military and intelligence leaders from around the world, especially “social media experts from across the armed forces and defense industry.”
. . .
“Social Media is increasingly important to the portrayal of armed forces, at home and abroad on operations; raising awareness of institutional issues; and gaining support through successful recruitment campaigns,” said conference Chairman, NATO’s Steven Mehringer, in an invitation brochure for the event.
The military’s goal of using social media to influence the beliefs of populations to win wars is alluded to in the description of other panels. A proposed panel titled ‘NATO’s Digital Outreach: Creating a Global Conversation’, describes NATO’s aim of “cultivating a global audience through social media to support The Alliance.”
Another panel discussion makes direct reference to the role of social media in covert US military ‘psychological warfare’ operations—i.e. propaganda—as well as the use of social media to support mass surveillance.
There’s more at the link.
At first I assumed that the conference was about nothing more or less than the usual propaganda exercises employed by all sides in any conflict. However, reading between the lines, it appears that they’re talking about more active – and more covert – interventions, such as ‘sock-puppeting‘ comments on or reactions to articles, blog posts, etc. that they don’t like. In other words, they wouldn’t act openly, or say that this is the view of a particular party; so one wouldn’t be able to exercise informed judgment on what they have to say.
I know some of the more totalitarian governments have been doing this for decades. (The so-called ‘Great Firewall of China‘ is a good example, and it’s now morphing into a ‘citizen score‘ for every person, upon which will depend their ability to get good jobs, get loans, or even eat well.) If Western nations are now starting to venture into the same territory, we’ll have to be on our guard.
To coin a phrase: Big Brother is not your friend.
Does President-elect DJT have the gravitas to do what is necessary? Without compromising the Constitution?
AH! There’s the rub.
No extra-constitutional executive orders. No bulls-in-china-shops (in spite of the fact he has no verbal filters!)
Of course, as with GWB, it won’t matter what he does or says to some people, just because he’s (in their view) the wrong person.
Bayou Renaissance Man has a take on the recent (and ongoing) unpleasantness (in part):
I’m astonished that no-one has yet pointed out, publicly and loudly, that the organized anti-Trump protests following his victory in last Tuesday’s election are as organized, and as manipulative, as most of the other protests we’ve seen all year long. It’s the same professional agitators, going from issue to issue and from state to state, seizing on any popular idea and transforming it into a lever to undermine our nation, our democracy and our constitution.Consider:
- The Black Lives Matter protests were very clearly organized. Numerous police forces admitted or asserted that ‘outsiders‘ came into town to make trouble, then moved on to the next protest. They were funded by the same source that bankrolled the Ferguson riots ‘protests’.
- As soon as the North Dakota pipeline protests geared up a few months ago, what happened to the BLM protests? Suddenly there was hardly a mention of them. The reason was simple – the activists turning the pipeline protests into a violent anti-police, anti-The-Man free-for-all were often the same ones that had been behind the BLM nastiness.
- Now that President-elect Trump is the focus, what’s happened to the pipeline protests? All of a sudden we don’t hear Word One about them in the media . . . because those organizing them, and spearheading the violence there, are now organizing the protests and spearheading the violence in the anti-Trump protests.
I’d love to be able to examine arrest records, or attendance records, from police forces all over the country, to see how many names and how many faces cropped up at all of the above protests over the past year. I’m willing to bet money there’ll be a lot of overlap.
One hopes Mr. Trump will find a way to cut the Gordian knot that ties all these anti-constitutional, anti-democratic, anti-American organizations and individuals together. It’s long overdue . . . and entirely necessary, IMHO.
An interesting perspective. Could it be that the same protesters move from protest to protest – almost as if it is their job?
(Remembering the OWS protesters and the similar folks who appear after mass shootings)
Finding a way to ‘cut the Gordian knot’ (as Peter puts it) + my .02…
And, of course, recognizing the other guy remains President for a while longer…
So said J. Edgar Hoover numerous times…until

Stuff happens, John!
TODAY IN HISTORY
The Apalachin Meeting (1957)
The Apalachin Meeting was a summit of some 100 Mafiosi from the US, Canada, and Italy that was raided after their fancy cars and out-of-state license plates aroused the suspicions of law enforcement agents in Apalachin, New York. Fifty-eight Mafiosi, including bosses Carlo Gambino and Vito Genovese, were detained.
Perhaps the most significant consequence of the raid was that it confirmed the American Mafia’s existence(…)

Of course, we’ve been told with the arrest and conviction of John Gotti, the Mafia died. Now we just have to worry about foreign cartels, yadda, yadda…

Some Pacific Islanders Have DNA Not Linked To Any Known Human Ancestor – All That Is Interesting
Children from the village of Hanuabada play cricket in the streets on February 24, 2012 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Most everyone knows that the islands of the South Pacific are some of the most remote and unique places on Earth, but a new study reveals just how unique they really are.According to a report from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, researchers have found traces of a previously unknown extinct hominid species in the DNA of the Melanesians, a group living in an area northeast of Australia that encompasses Papua New Guinea and the surrounding islands.A computer analysis suggests that the unidentified ancestral hominid species found in Melanesian DNA is unlikely to be either Neanderthal or Denisovan, the two known predecessors of humankind to this point.

An addendum to that whole ‘the science is settled’ thing.
We thought we knew about the origins of mankind.
About these “protests”…
I wonder if it’s just Soros or SEIU (famous for earlier OWS busings) or LaRaza? Or a coordinated effort by community organizers (outside agitators) in all these groups?
I was told by a liberal friend that it didn’t happen against Obama, because folks think Trump is more dangerous (!?) Different strokes, I guess. I thought Obama was/is plenty dangerous…
As for me, there have been Presidents and policies with whom/which I disagreed over the past 40 years. But, I couldn’t leave school – I’d have been suspended. And work? Fired.
Besides, I had and needed to keep my job! (I’m guess this IS a job for many of these folks!)
(in part from Free North Carolina)
Paid fake protesters were bused in to the anti-Trump protests in Austin, Texas.
They must have spent a lot of Soros money on this operation.
There was a whole string of buses.
Everything they do is fake or paid for.
‘Students’, aka Lenin’s useful idiots.
Funny how they sport MEXICAN flags and professionally-made signs…
The Internet says the epicenter of the protest activity is OREGON! (where Austin, Berkeley, Tucson, SF et al should relocate!)
At least this gives folks something to do.
(BTW – I’m all for protest – it’s a fine American tradition. Criminal damage, arson, rioting, and assault are crimes, not protest.)
(AND WHILE WE’RE ON THE SUBJECT)
There’s ‘movement’ to force the Electoral College to change their vote to coincide with the popular vote! (I wonder if such a movement would exist if the result had been reversed?), AND, a movement to amend the Constitution to make the Presidential Election by popular vote!!
Didn’t any of these folks take Eighth Grade Civics?
For those who missed it, The United States is a REPUBLIC, NOT a democracy (aka majority/mob rule). Please see the map below:
Do you REALLY want only the regions in blue deciding who becomes President? THIS is why the Electoral College was created. The Founding Fathers were smart cookies – thinking of fly-over States before the airplane was even invented!
