Tamara (Again) Takes The Internets!

as recently posted by The Queen of Snark (in part)

(…) In the wake of the Istanbul bombings, the people in charge of wrapping the world in foam padding are trying to figure out more ways to make us perfectly safe. Apparently this will put a security checkpoint at the edge of the airport grounds to screen you before you get to the security checkpoint inside which will screen you to get on the plane. It’s screeners all the way down!

(…)

…and if they move screening back to the airport access road, they set off a truck bomb in the traffic jam rather than a backpack bomb in the terminal.

The reductio ad absurdum of this, of course, is to avoid creating the security bottlenecks that make such target-rich environments by putting a TSA checkpoint outside every front door in America.

(and here’s the money line)

There’s just no practical way to nerf the world.

PoliceOne. Gun Control Zero!

Or, at least, a sniveling 14%!

from Wirecutter

PoliceOne, a private organization with 450,000 members (380,000 full-time active law enforcement and 70,000 retired), polled its members in 2013 shortly after the Newtown, Conn., massacre. Eighty percent of respondents said allowing legally armed citizens to carry guns in places such as Newtown and Aurora would have reduced the number of casualties. Another 6 percent thought the presence of legally armed civilians would “likely” have prevented the innocent casualties altogether.

According to police and prosecutors, there have been dozens of cases of permit holders clearly stopping what would have been mass public shootings. It’s understandable these killers avoid places where they can’t kill a large number of people.

Because so-called ‘gun free’ zones work so well…

Federal Court Rules That Your Child Must ‘Share’ The Restroom

04/25/2016

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Seriously, we’re all sitting here watching the USA morph into one giant first world problem.

On Tuesday, the Fourth Circuit Court ruled against a Virginia school district that sought to accommodate a transgender student while also protecting the privacy rights of other students.

The court concluded that Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972—which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex—should be interpreted as prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity, as a Department of Education letter suggested in 2015. The ruling allows a lawsuit brought by a transgender student to proceed.

The case involves a biological girl who identifies as a boy. The court’s majority explains it this way: “G.G.’s birth-assigned sex, or so-called ‘biological sex,’ is female, but G.G.’s gender identity is male.” Note the scare quotes around what the court calls “so-called ‘biological sex.’” Biological sex, in fact, is precisely what Congress protected.

I’m confused.  Certainly there are folks who are ‘gender confused’, as well.  I would think the medical community would be the final determinator regarding whether or not a person requires gender reassignment or therapy to resolve the issues (?)

Remember Charles Beaumont?  The mystery, horror and science fiction author who wrote about horrible things.  Twilight Zone, Night Gallery and Tales from the Unknown have episodes.

Tales from the Unknown had one regarding a little girl who was tortured as a child.  Fed from a dog dish, especially when she showed male tendencies.  BECAUSE SHE WAS IN FACT ANATOMICALLY MALE!

Charles Beaumont had this done to him when he was a child!

If you have XX chromosomes, you are female.  If you have XY chromosomes, you are male.  Those with actual chromosome ‘issues’ make up something like 0.3% of the population.  Others might need therapy, not reassignment and surgery.  Certainly ‘self-identification’ alone contributes to the problem.

If you are confused, seek help.

Of course, this is not easy.  Between societal and parental pressures, the media and some person’s agendas. And as for The American Psychological Association?  The one that just came out and said adults are naturally attracted to children?!  Agendas abound.

I was a father to a daughter.  NO WAY IN HELL would I have allowed some five-o-clock-shadowed lummox in a dress to follow her into the ladies room because he ‘self-identified’ as a woman!

Then I saw THIS (one example of many) on Wirecutter’s blog…

Small Acts of Cowardice Are Destroying Our Culture

Early this morning I was reading Rod Dreher’s blog at the American Conservative and stumbled across yet another dispatch from the utterly absurd bathroom wars. One of his New York City readers wrote in to say that her 14-year-old daughter had just finished dressing in a city locker room when a grown man stepped from the showers wearing only a towel. Girls as young as seven were present, and they were staring at the man with “concerned expressions.” The reader ends her e-mail with, “It sucks to be a parent these days.”
And indeed it does suck, especially when you know that even your friends and alleged allies are simply too timid to act.

(and this is ONE example of MANY where perverts are abusing the ‘good will’ of the courts!)

There was a time when accidentally walking into the ‘wrong’ room was an embarrassing accident, and walking in to view the opposite sex and/or take photos or commit sexual assault was considered a crime!

How many years have gay men and women gotten a thrill out of sharing a restroom or a shower with straights of their own gender?  And they were held responsible if they were inappropriate or criminal?

We are through the looking glass, people.  And it’s two-way and perverts of all varieties are watching!

“Characteristics of the Armed Individual” Secret Service Training

usssThis is probably brule’ for those of us who are ‘gunnies’ and carry with regularity, but is still interesting with regard to how those in the federal law enforcement circle views such things.

It IS nice edged weapons are included!

(from The Firearms Blog)

The guide itself is rather basic, mostly written word of generally common-sense spotting techniques that most law enforcement would look for during any encounter.

The first and basic step is to “determine (the) strong side” which can be determined by looking for cues such as watches, writing, smoking, and other daily tasks.

Then, according to the Secret Service “An individual who carries a gun on their person will periodically touch that gun both consciously and unconsciously.” (I disagree with this, carrying on a regular basis and with training, many concealed carriers will not touch their firearm, but can see how for MOST encounters, this is true).

Perhaps the most interesting nugget (At least to me) is that the “the majority of right-handed people that carry handguns illegally carry them in the right front waist band, loose.” The document then explains that its because doing so is “cool”, seen in the movies” and “where it is most secure and accessible.”

You can see the whole document here, courtesy of Public Intelligence. (6 pages PDF)

I was reminded of walking through downtown Scottsdale (many years ago) after the Az CCW law initially passed.  In a couple of hours, I spotted at least nine persons carrying concealed weapons.  I’m certain part of the observation was this was a relatively new legal behavior and folks weren’t used to doing so yet.  But people tugging up on there waist bands on the right side under their overshirts, and wearing overshirts were a good beginning!

Most cops or plainclothes agents aren’t that concerned with concealment, and get accustomed to carrying many hour a day, and have done so for years.

Having done so, myself, for many years, I’ve the same comfort and familiarity.

And hope you have it, as well!

“Stratfor? What’s A Stratfor?”

…to cook in!  NO – that’s a potfor!  🙂

This is no children’s joke…

NO, this is about STRATFOR

Earlier this year, private intelligence firm Strategic Forecasting, or Stratfor, published its Decade Forecast, in which it projects the next 10 years of global political and economic developments.

While international analysts often try their hand at predicting the major events of the coming year, Stratfor believes that it’s identified the major trends of the next 10.

In many ways, Stratfor thinks the world a decade from now will be more dangerous place, with US power waning and other prominent countries experiencing a period of chaos and decline.

An interest part of all this (which, in order to read, must be emailed free to you – if you are not a Stratfor subscriber) is little mention is made of the United States.  And the increase in ongoing, government-imposed tyranny.
We’ve a tendency, as participants in the American Experiment, to think ‘we’ will go on forever – I’m certain the Romans thought the same…
Still an interesting read.

Cat-A**-Trophy

Belle, after a hard day of messing up my life

I generally do not allow the livestock into my room.  Because of mild allergies and annoyances – as it is my ‘sanctuary’.

HOWEVER, the ‘kitten’ Belle (who is now over one year; officially a cat) does sometimes get in.  She is generally friendly and loving (except the whole trying-to-trip-me-on-the-stairs thing).  And there is something soothing about petting a cat and hearing her purr.

BUT, she does like to explore, and find mischief.  Like going to my desk and retrieving wrapped sugar-free cough drops as toys.  Which she then drops to the floor, making them dog fodder – should they get in.  And for me to step on, later.

The biggest annoyance, though, is as my computer is open on my desk – she walks on and sometimes lays on the keyboard!  When this happens, two things occur:

  1. Somehow, she connects to illegal government security and/or porn sites  (SERIOUSLY, how does she DO that?)
  2. She presses combinations of keys making my use of the computer impossible!

The other morning, I began my usual rituals ending with sitting at my desk and starting to do my blog.  Suddenly, it became VERY clear that anything I typed (No, TRIED to type) wasn’t working!  It was as if the keyboard were haunted!  Periods became <, even when the caps lock was off!  Highlighting text (to cut and paste into my blog software) became very finicky and non-responsive.  I actually began thinking I would not be able to use my PC to blog on and would have to resort to my tablet, which would be much more difficult.

Much cursing, whining and praying ensued.

After roughly 45 minutes, some combination of keyboard tweaks I tried actually WORKED!  I was able to do the blog as I usually do, complete with correct punctuation!  HUZZAH!  Of course, I’ve no idea how I fixed things, exactly…

The plan, now, is to remove the wireless keyboard to an undisclosed location, if I am not using it, lest the kitten invade again.

And to figure out how she’s getting to those websites.

NO, not those ones!

Double Tap (and Stack)

My roomie recently made an impulse buy at our local gun store.  A Double Tap derringer.  In .45 ACP!

(from their website)  DoubleTap Firearms has developed  the world’s smallest and lightest .45 ACP concealed carry pistol on the market today. Also available in 9mm.

Titanium or Aluminium Frames with a MIL-STD finish that resists corrosion
Stainless Steel Barrels
Two rounds in the chamber and integral grips house an additional two spare rounds
Optional Ported barrels reduces muzzle flip and recoil
Small, slim, no-snag hammerless design for easy pocket carry
Ambidextrous thumb latch to eject spent rounds
U.S. Patent No. D686685 and other Patents Pending

RE:  Double Action Trigger – She (WE) have not shot her yet, but as it’s 14 oz. and a 1911 is traditionally 39, I suspect it comes-back-a-bit.  (Roomie did not get the comped barrels!)  Her trigger is a long, crunchy pull, which is her only ‘safety’.  If one has the time, I believe the proper way to activate the trigger is by stacking or staging.

That is pulling smoothly until the double-action mechanism takes up slack, then holding and gaining a sight-picture before touching her off.

Even the manufacturer’s own literature says she is NOT a target or competition piece.  I suspect, like the classic Derringer, she’s a ‘put into a gut or orifice and empty’ kind of firearm.

She does come with a clip – a speed strip kind of device holding an additional 6 rounds.  And a two-rounder stored neatly in the butt of the weapon.

Now, if it is only comfortable pain-free not impossible to shoot!

(I will post an AAR after we field test her.)

attn FTC – she bought it, okay?

Too Late

Shall Not Be Questioned took us to Outdoor Life with this hypocritical revelation of Bill Maher:

While mocking the Constitution and Bill of Rights during a panel discussion with documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, Andrew Ross Sorkin of The New York Times and MSNBC’s S.E. Cupp, Maher criticized the failed Manchin-Toomey expanded background checks bill because it prohibited a national gun registry.

Of course we need a gun registry,” Maher said. “The Second Amendment is bullsh*t.

A short while later in his blathering discourse, Maher revealed he actually owns two firearms that he keeps in his home — one upstairs and one downstairs — and that he goes to the range twice a year to practice shooting.

Maher said there have been 12 home invasions in his neighborhood over the last year and he needs the guns to protect himself.

As long as we live in the gun country, I ain’t giving up my guns,” he said.

I don’t think I need add to this, save, if ‘they’ do eventually have a registry, and proceed with confiscation (which history shows us ALWAYS follows) Mr. Maher will have a decision to make – either voluntarily give up his right of self-defense against crime and tyranny, or join us.  Too late.

crocCare to join me then in crocodile tears?

A Cut Above…

Collectors Weekly takes us back to another time – to a more elegant weapon.

“When I got this sword, it was completely covered in blood rust.” Sword maker Francis Boyd is showing me yet another weapon pulled from yet another safe in the heavily fortified workshop behind his northern California home.

“You can tell it’s blood,” he says matter-of-factly, “because ordinary rust turns the grinding water brown. If it’s blood rust it bleeds, it looks like blood in the water. Even 2,000 years old, it bleeds. And it smells like a steak cooking, like cooked meat. I’ve encountered this before with Japanese swords from World War II. If there’s blood on the sword and you start polishing it, the sword bleeds. It comes with the territory.”

Swords, sword history, swordmaking, swordcraft.  This is the domain of Francis Boyd, swordmaker extraordinaire.

100YearDouble

a 2000-year-old, 100 layer sword in his collection

I’m fascinated by weaponry.  Especially that which I might be able to own and actually employ.  Sadly, while most equipment is now out of my reach, I still enjoy the appearance of fine craftsmanship.  The long dedication of the master gunsmith or sword-maker.  No plastic here!  (Sorry Gaston Glock!)

You should go to the link above and learn.  I did.

Home Invasion

Brigid poses a very common-sense post regarding how to protect oneself and family from home invasion.  They are becoming more common Nationwide.  While most violent crime is dropping.

Between gangs thinking you have something of value, and law enforcement making address mistakes, it’s wise to be prepared.  Just as with a mugging, a cell phone just won’t cut it.

I used to work with a TV field cameraman for Channel * here locally, and he responded to a home invasion in the Valley wherein the criminals obviously were looking for drugs and money.  They had a wrong address.  The miscreants were fully outfitted as Mexican Army Nationals.  The police pulled his camera tape of the crime scene and the post-invasion interviews, because they didn’t want the public to think the United States was being invaded by a foreign power.

We were.

These events are not just a couple of teens kicking in a door, looking for thrills and spare change.  These are serious people.

Be Prepared.
