(from Peter-Bayou Renaissance Man)
In watching the brouhaha over alleged links between President Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, and allegations of who said what, when, to whom, and why, and what the words mean, I’m driven to a conclusion already reached by many. This nation is irreparably, irreconcilably divided against itself.
That became clear during the Presidential elections last year. Even before the vote, researchers identified several key areas in which the two sides of our political divide have become more and more divided. What’s more, that divide has come to dominate different areas and groups in our body politic. To name just one example, since President Trump’s election, the mainstream news media (dominated to an extraordinary extent by the left, progressive wing of US politics) have unleashed a barrage of insults, disdain and attacks that is almost unprecedented in its uniformity. Sure, past Presidents have faced similar attacks from a segment of US media; but there were always almost equal and opposing resources to respond in kind. That’s no longer the case, thanks to the domination of the media by left-wing money and groups and individuals. Alternative views are all but drowned out by the hubbub.
What’s more, the mainstream media no longer care about non-partisanship. They openly advocate for one side or the other. A classic example is an article in the Washington Post last Sunday titled ‘Is media coverage of Trump too negative? You’re asking the wrong question.‘ A key quote:
The president’s supporters often say his accomplishments get short shrift. But let’s face it: Politicians have no right to expect equally balanced positive and negative coverage, or anything close to it. If a president is doing a rotten job, it’s the duty of the press to report how and why he’s doing a rotten job.
There’s more at the link.
I happen to believe, unlike the author, that the question in the title of the article is the right question, and needs answering: and I believe that her cavalier dismissal of the president as ‘doing a rotten job’ is her own partisan perspective, rather than based on fact. Therein lies the problem. She would probably dismiss me as a ‘right-wing nut job’, rather than take my views seriously. (I tried very hard to read her article with an open mind, but the partisanship of which it reeked made that very difficult indeed.) Of course, the same bias and partisanship can be found in articles on the other side of the political divide, as well. The problem cuts both ways.
A blogger writing under the name of Didact summed up the divide in an article last January.
On the one side, we have always had the small-government libertarian types. Back in the days of Jefferson and Adams, they were the Southern Democrats. They were primarily advocates of an agrarian-focused, decentralised, minimalist, small-government philosophy that generally left people the hell alone to get on with their own business.
On the other side, we have also always had the mercantilists, the industrialists, the big-government centralists. They believed that a strong central government was absolutely required to prevent the new nation from being overwhelmed by its competitors and sinking into irrelevance or slavery under a foreign power.
That ideological difference has persisted, in various forms and espoused by various parties, all the way through to the modern day. That is of course well known. Eventually, the divide became so deep and so bitter that it resulted in the War Between the States, which Northerners rather oxymoronically refer to as the Civil War, and Southerners somewhat more accurately refer to as the War of Northern Aggression.
That divide was eventually papered over, at least somewhat, by the North’s crushing victory over the South. To this day, the South still hasn’t fully recovered from that defeat and the years of the Reconstruction Era that followed- and the wounds and scars inflicted by that defeat still linger on.
But- and here is the key difference between then and now- even throughout those times of bitterest division and discord, the two sides were able to talk to each other, right up until the time for talking was over and there was nothing left to do but start shooting.
And that is precisely what America has now lost.
You will not find finer exemplars of the two spirits of America than Presidents Adams and Jefferson. One believed completely in a strong central government; the other believed equally completely in a weak one. The two argued, often contentiously and always with eloquence and conviction, in favour of their respective positions.
Yet the two of them were also closer than brothers. Their respect for each other transcended their political differences and united them in their love for their new country, and their desire to see it succeed. Not for nothing have they been called “Founding Brothers“.
This is what America has lost today. The two sides of the debate no longer talk to each other. They talk past each other.
Again, more at the link.
Many people recognize the existence of this divide in America; but not many have thought about its implications for our nation as a whole. Well, I’m a pastor, albeit a retired one. I try to look at and think about this country from the perspective of my faith, just as others will see it through the filters of their own biases and perceptions and bedrock perspectives. That faith makes me ask: have things gone too far? Have we reached a tipping point?
Jesus warned us: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” Right now, our ‘kingdom’ (or country) is divided against itself. Right now, our cities – overwhelmingly left-of-center in their political orientation – are divided against the heartland that feeds and sustains them. Right now, our houses – our families – are often divided on political, social and economic issues.
Can this nation, in its present form, survive a divide so deep, so bitter, and so vitriolic? I don’t know . . . but I have real and very serious doubts. What say you, readers?
I remember stories of the politicians of old (the Sixties), who would yell at each other on the Senate or House floor, then meet afterward to share a beverage or two.
We have lost that civility, both in the legislature and the general population.
We already have discord, violence and riots in the streets. And on the Internet.
What’s next – A shooting war?
(Last Minute Louis™ is the moniker I’ve given myself for procrastinating)
So, here it is again. Tax time.
The government giveth and the government taketh away.
INCOME TAX IS THEFT! Period.
Having said that, being on disability, I don’t generally get taxed. Of course, I don’t get paid much, either.
And, as most of it comes from the government, they could decide at any moment to take it back, or stop giving it to me.
Regardless, I must file stoopid paperwork under penalty of law this time of year, showing how poor I really am.
I may make up to $1000 a month over my stipends, and not lose benefits – like someone would hire a 64-year-old cripple with many health problems, including the need to recline every couple of hours!
I DID finish the requisite forms and efiled last night about 1915 hours.
Having no real property, assets or income, I pay nothing. And am receiving nothing in return.
The State of Arizona does see fit to give the lowly $25.00 in return. Of course, it cost me $10.00 to file!
And a couple hours of combing through meaningless paperwork.
Is it any wonder I’m a Last Minute Louis™?

As I predicted in my best-selling book about President Trump’s plan to save America, the Democrats and their media accomplices have declared all-out war on the Trump White House. Under the guise of “resistance” – as though the Trump was the head of an occupying army rather than an elected president – they have set out to destroy his administration. They are not “sore losers,” as many had surmised when their hysterical attacks on Trump as an American Hitler began, they are an army of saboteurs bent on destroying the government the voters preferred. Their general, Barack Obama, is an unrepentant radical who abused the office of the presidency when he was in power, and as ex-president is now leading a war to overthrow his successor.
Is this hyperbole, or fact?
What do you guys think?
AND – what do we, as citizens of a Constitutional Republic, DO about it?
(I’m convinced their vanguard is roughly 3% of the Democratic Party. Old hippies who believed in the Weathermen, race-baiters, other radicals searching for a cause (rebels w/o a clue!), unemployed – because employed folks have to work!)
PS – I am not a Trump supporter. I think the last election was Hobson’s Choice – an unrepentant criminal Marxist versus a Huey Long copycat with lots of money, playing to the Silent Majority. Trump has some good ideas, but seems less educated regarding how the Constitution works!
There was supposed to be a general strike of female folk to show solidarity against President Trump’s record of abuse (a locker room joke told eleven years ago), and his capitalist/anti-socialist policies.
(And support for the female candidate who lost? The candidate who’s husband is a serial rapist, and who (regardless) whom ‘everyone’ loves?)
Tamara informed us that IF women are to be participating in commerce, it should ONLY be with women and minorities! She surmises Blacks, Asians and other folk must be honorary women for the day!
What I take from the general strike folks is women and minorities are the oppressed. Oppressed by THE MAN! More specifically, the WHITE MAN.
Lemme take a guess here: this ‘movement’ is fomented by The Left, perhaps Soros and company, as another version of ‘protest’ to destabilize society by showing no one supports the current administration. (written before I saw the report below…) 😛
Except, of course, those who voted for him.
And, these strikers failed to consider collateral damage. If kids go to school, and no female teachers are present, where will they go?
Or rather a series of protests across the country (and the World), following the Presidential inauguration. Reportedly in significant numbers.
What exactly was being protested, and by whom?
It appeared to be largely women. Protesting Donald Trump’s history of misogyny. Because of a locker-room style comment he made eleven years ago. Some protesters showed class, by dressing like this:
To be fair, not everyone was dressed this way.
I did notice most of the ‘notables’ involved in the protests were ‘left of center’, demanding continued funding for Planned Parenthood (as an example), and more government funding for all their concerns (like free health care for all), and consisted of folks like (from this AP report):
(…) Pop diva Madonna made an unannounced appearance Saturday in Washington, joining hundreds of thousands of protesters who rallied for women’s rights in defiance of Trump.
Other celebrities at the massive demonstration included actresses Scarlett Johansson, Ashley Judd and America Ferrera, filmmaker Michael Moore and the feminist icon Gloria Steinem.
I did notice conservative women were absent – perhaps discouraged from appearing?
A friend’s protest sign:
Part of the protest was regarding protection of the environment. Here is one photo following a protest:
I’m certain more government money/labor will be needed to clean up after the protesters.
But, going to the government teat seems to be their fallback. Wait! Can I say that? Great – I’ll probably have women dressed as boobies outside my door, now…
Naw, I’m not as important at The President. 🙂
(You all know I support legal protest – it’s a fine American tradition. I didn’t see any reports of violence or criminal damage. Good for you, ladies – and Michael Moore.)
About these “protests”…
I wonder if it’s just Soros or SEIU (famous for earlier OWS busings) or LaRaza? Or a coordinated effort by community organizers (outside agitators) in all these groups?
I was told by a liberal friend that it didn’t happen against Obama, because folks think Trump is more dangerous (!?) Different strokes, I guess. I thought Obama was/is plenty dangerous…
As for me, there have been Presidents and policies with whom/which I disagreed over the past 40 years. But, I couldn’t leave school – I’d have been suspended. And work? Fired.
Besides, I had and needed to keep my job! (I’m guess this IS a job for many of these folks!)
(in part from Free North Carolina)
Paid fake protesters were bused in to the anti-Trump protests in Austin, Texas.
They must have spent a lot of Soros money on this operation.
There was a whole string of buses.
Everything they do is fake or paid for.
‘Students’, aka Lenin’s useful idiots.
Funny how they sport MEXICAN flags and professionally-made signs…
The Internet says the epicenter of the protest activity is OREGON! (where Austin, Berkeley, Tucson, SF et al should relocate!)
At least this gives folks something to do.
(BTW – I’m all for protest – it’s a fine American tradition. Criminal damage, arson, rioting, and assault are crimes, not protest.)
(AND WHILE WE’RE ON THE SUBJECT)
There’s ‘movement’ to force the Electoral College to change their vote to coincide with the popular vote! (I wonder if such a movement would exist if the result had been reversed?), AND, a movement to amend the Constitution to make the Presidential Election by popular vote!!
Didn’t any of these folks take Eighth Grade Civics?
For those who missed it, The United States is a REPUBLIC, NOT a democracy (aka majority/mob rule). Please see the map below:
Do you REALLY want only the regions in blue deciding who becomes President? THIS is why the Electoral College was created. The Founding Fathers were smart cookies – thinking of fly-over States before the airplane was even invented!
Yep, pigs must be flying!
I’m actually writing about a sporting event.
(for the new reader, you’ve heard of sports widows? I’m a sports orphan. My Dad, if he wasn’t playing, coaching or officiating baseball, basketball, football and hockey, he was watching them! Being disabled at age 12, my Dad could no longer relate to me. See? Sports Orphan.)
Consequently, I occasionally watch Olympic events, but none of the sports listed above. The last time I watched an entire baseball game was probably with my Dad. And he passed in 1977.
And certainly have no interest in any foreign sport.
My roommate hails from CHICAGOLAND. And, while she is not a big sports fan, has loyalty to the region of her birth. In spite of the fact she has lived in Arizona since 1981.
Which brings me to the whole pigs flying thing. She wanted to watch Game Seven of the Chicago Cubs/Cleveland Indians World Series last night.
And she didn’t want to watch it alone…
So, I joined her in watching the game. Turns out, it was a pretty even match-up (except for that Cleveland pitcher who was more of cyborg than man!)
And, we watched the entire game together. Including the tarping of the field and through the Tenth inning. All the way to the end.
And hats off to the Indians. Both sides appeared gentlemanly and gave it their all.
Unlike the players in the political arena. The game was peppered with thoroughly nasty political commercials. And reports of vandalism and violence continue.
No riots or violence were reported following the World Series.
Maybe there’s a lesson which can be learned from this?
PS – The Joe Maddon for President bumper stickers will continue for sale on the sidebar through the election. Joe is the Cubs manager. All monies raised are donated to a charity of Joe’s choosing (he does this a lot!)
Peter (of Bayou Renaissance Man) posted a concise analysis of the the hows and whys of where this election could possibly go.
And, it’s NOT a positive post!
At least for those of us who believe in this Constitutional Republic and Individual Liberty.
His last paragraph:
I remain convinced that if Clinton wins, this Republic cannot survive in its present form. She and her urban elite supporters have already all but trashed our Constitution, blatantly selling themselves and their public offices to the highest bidder. If they win again, they’ll trample underfoot what remains of our nation. We’ll be swamped by illegal aliens, many of whom will vote (illegally or not) for the party that promises them the biggest handouts. If our Republic and Constitution are to be preserved, I fear this election may be the final opportunity to do so via the ballot box.
You should really go and read the whole post.
And it’s precursor.
I’ve posted before regarding how this Republic is unique in history, and how even the Romans probably thought they would continue forever. I think most folks don’t read history or blogs. They are too busy trying to eke out an existence, living paycheck to paycheck, hoping the Government won’t continue to tax them into oblivion, or continue to erode their God-given rights to dust.
If they even consider such things.
They feel they are tiny cogs in the uber-machine, and have no control over the inevitable outcome.
And that The American Experiment will not continue forever.
Peter says: “If our Republic and Constitution are to be preserved, I fear this election may be the final opportunity to do so via the ballot box.”
What could happen after that is too painful to consider.
Please VOTE, as if your Life and The Republic depends on it!
I fear it does…
No, this is NOT a heretofore undiscovered John D. MacDonald Travis McGee novel!
A Clinton campaign email released as part of the Wikileaks data dump earlier today talks about the need to maintain political power by producing “an unaware and compliant citizenry”.
The email was sent to Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta by former Clinton administration official Bill Ivey on March 13, 2016.
Yeah, THAT’S the only way Secretary Clinton can maintain political power! Unawareness and compliance.
Because, if she had illicit power, the aware and uncompliant would take it from her!
Maybe it’s Dopers to the left of me, Gunnies to the right…?
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals last week decided it was ‘ok’ to deny the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens, who happened to possess State-issued medical marijuana cards!
I’m guessing, because BATFE Rules stipulate if one is ‘addicted’ to the maryjane, one is a prohibited possessor. Because while many States have medical mj in place, and some have legalized or decriminalized it’s possession, it’s still against Federal law.
I’ve met some folks who might have medical mj cards. And might own firearms. Who are generally responsible citizens.
As a side note, the same day the Administration reported they are NOT removing mj from the rolls as a Schedule 1 substance, was the same day the President’s daughter was reported smoking a joint.
And, of course, the President himself has been pictured in his youth doing mj and admitted using cocaine. What’s good for the goose is not good for his daughter? Isn’t he in close proximity of many firearms?
I remain a libertarian (small L). As such, I condemn drug laws for adults. As the Left is fond of intoning it’s YOUR body! If you want to eat, shoot, snort (rub-into-your-belly or whatever – G. Carlin) something, it’s your choice!
And just because someone tokes once-in-a-while, should that prohibit them from possessing a firearm? Even if they are doing so LEGALLY in their State?
How many gun folks do you know who drink more than the legally-approved quantity of alcohol and carry? I would guess more than one…
A Right is a Right is a Right. What you put in your body or what you use to protect it should not be up to government bureaucrats!
