The Brass Dance

If you’ve shot anything more than a revolver or a single-shot firearm, you are probably aware of the safety problems inherent in ejected brass.

It’s dirty.  It’s fast.  It’s HOT!

Most folks learn rather quickly why experienced shooters wear safety gear.  Not only hearing and eye protection, but proper clothing.

Burned fingers, hands, arms.  I’ve known two guys who had ejected brass wedge between their shooting glasses and faces!  Not pretty.  And most of us have been beaned in the head a few times.

A brimmed hat or cap, and an ‘appropriate’ shirt.  Female shooters especially can be in danger from hot brass, if they wear a low neckline.  I used to know a woman who was president of a group of female shooters called The Annie Oakleys.  She would often joke their unofficial salute was to bend forward at the waist and shake rapidly! 🙂   (to divest themselves of ejected, hot brass)

But this is not just about minor discomfort or humor.

(from The Firearm Blog, in part)

Just this past weekend, a father took his 14 year old son out to an indoor range in Sarasota Florida to celebrate Independence Day early.  You can read about it here. They were using the far right hand lane. The father was shooting a handgun when the brass ejected and hit the wall. It bounced off and went inside his shirt. Nothing out of the ordinary there. What happens next is the problem. The father reaches back with his right hand to pull his shirt so he can get the hot brass out. The handgun was still in his right hand. He had a negligent discharge and his son was shot. I am sad to say that son died due to his injuries.

We can bleat about The Four Rules all we want, but unless we take them to heart and use them religiously, even during a perceived emergency, there isn’t much point.

My heart goes out to the father and family in this story.

Redress Of Grievances

Ever wonder HOW to do that, exactly?

Remember the post I did a while back (along with many other bloggers) regarding this administration’s ongoing attempts to restrict the rights of law-abiding Social Security recipients?

Did that tick you off?  It did me.

How may one address – or rather redress – this grievance?!

I was given an answer!  (from the G.O.A., in part)

A Brief Note from the Executive Director

Dear Guffaw,

Earlier this week, Gun Owners of America emailed you about Obama’s latest gun grab — a ban that is aimed at Social Security recipients who want to pass on their gun collections to their children and grandchildren.

Unfortunately, we neglected to include in that email, the sample text which can be sent to the Social Security Administration.  It was posted on the web version of this alert, but was not included in the email.

I apologize for that omission.

You can now find the sample text below, with instructions on how to send it to the Social Security Administration — thus registering your opposition to these diabolical regulations which jeapordize gun collections in hundreds of thousands of American homes.

As always, I want to thank you for your activism.

In Liberty,

Erich Pratt
Executive Director
Gun Owners of America

How to Take Action

The Social Security Administration has posted regulations here.  And they are inviting comments from the general public.

While you can fax or mail your comments, they “strongly recommend that you submit your comments via the Internet.”

So here’s what to do:

  • Visit the Federal eRulemaking portal at http://www.regulations.gov.
  • Use the “Search” function to find docket number SSA–2016–0011.
  • Submit your comments, using the pre-written text suggested below or by uploading your own text.

NOTE:  The regulations state that, “The system will issue a tracking number to confirm your submission.  You will not be able to view your comment immediately because we must post each comment manually.  It may take up to a week or more for your comment to be viewable.”

You have until July 5 to submit your comments.

Suggested Response to the Social Security Administration (below)

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to you regarding the SOCIAL SECURITY GUN BAN — docket number SSA–2016–0011 — which was formally published in the Federal Register in May.

I am in opposition to this rule and urge the administration to withdraw it.

We have seen this game before at the hands of the Veterans Administration:  To date, over 250,000 law-abiding veterans who have served their country honorably have had their constitutional rights stripped from them.

The VA claims veterans can contest the removal of their rights — and can petition to have them restored.  This rule claims the same right to petition.

But you know — as does the VA — that that process costs at least $10,000. In fact, to be successful, the cost would be more like $20,000 to $100,000.

For this reason, data shows that a tiny fraction of these veterans have successfully used these illusory mechanisms to reclaim their rights.

Under this proposed rule, if a person is on Social Security disability by reason of a mental health impairment, then their gun rights are gone. Period.

The regulation promises to aggressively search for and take away the gun rights of Social Security Disability recipients with PTSD, ADHD, post partem depression, Alzheimer’s, etc.

But understand this:  Some parts of the regulation, like the definition of “adjudicated as a mental defective” in proposed CFR 421.105, are applicable to all Title II recipients, including old-age programs.

Make no mistake: It is clear to everyone that your hidden agenda (disarming seniors) is much broader than your ostensible agenda (disarming the disabled).

Thus, under this language, if a senior can’t “manage their own affairs,” they are specifically acknowledged by the Social Security Administration as being a “mental defective” for purposes of making them a prohibited person.

Barack Obama claims that this regulation would involve 75,000 persons (who would unconstitutionally lose their fundamental rights), but you understand that the number is more likely to be in the multiple hundreds of thousands.

Then you propose to turn in the names of these innocent law-abiding Americans to the FBI, for the sake of unilaterally stripping them of fundamental constitutional guarantees — all without a hearing or any due process whatsoever.

And, while you propose to do this on the basis of your victims’ incompetence (“mental defect”), you simultaneously assume they are competent to know what you are doing to them — and to round up and dispose of all their firearms in order to avoid becoming Instant Felons.

You probably don’t know this and probably don’t care:  But octogenarians are not a high-crime demographic.  Very large numbers of them have firearms which they intend to pass on to their children, however.

And most of them would be surprised that they were being turned into “Instant Felons,” subject to SWAT teams and potential prison sentences.

I understand you’re marching to the beat of a Leftist political drummer.  But understand this:  groups like Gun Owners of America will work with Congress to defund this corrupt exercise.

And every senior citizen in America will go into the polling booth this fall with the knowledge of your unsuccessful little effort to turn them into criminals.

For all these reasons, and more, I urge you to withdraw the SOCIAL SECURITY GUN BAN — docket number SSA–2016–0011.

Sincerely,

I did it.  It took less than 5 minutes.  You have almost a month to do the same.  Or, draft your own response!

Many of us whine BIGGOV isn’t listening.  We need to actually say something to them, not just grouse amongst ourselves.  Here is an opportunity.

Take Action!

When Is A Pope Not A Pope?

(from Brock Townsend)

Pope Ditched Two Refugees Once He Found Out They Were Christians

Via David

https://www.jihadwatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Roula-and-Malek-Abo.jpg

One of the most appalling aspects of the current refugee crisis is that persecuted Christian across the Middle East are being completely ignored in favor of Muslim migrants. And when even the world’s most prominent Christian figurehead does nothing to help, but instead worships at the altar of multiculturalism and its “new world order,” what hope is there for Middle East Christians fleeing genocide?

A disturbing report claims that when Pope Francis found out that two of the 12 Muslim refugees he recently planned to take back to the Vatican turned out to be Christians, he “dropped them like a hot potato.”

Roula and Malek Abo, a Christian brother and sister duo who hail from Syria, say they have been “let down” by the Pope after left them behind at a Lesbos refugee camp. They were promised a new life in Italy. According to blogger Geoffrey Grider:

Holy Father, I’m confused?  You seem to be more socialist than Catholic, and now more Muslim?  Or, at least, more political?  (Not that other Pope’s haven’t been political…)
I’d make a list, but it would be REALLY long!
Perhaps, this was just about a photo op?
(Full Disclosure – I was baptized Catholic, but raised away from The Church, largely under the influence of my Presbyterian step-mother.  My Father pretended not to care, but was a Catholic in secret.  So, I’ve never been confirmed in The Church, and don’t follow the infallible Papacy as God’s Word.)
And then, there’s the whole ‘render unto Caesar’ thing…

WHAT Are Those Four Rules, Again?

(from Free North Carolina)

https://i0.wp.com/wusa-download.edgesuite.net/video/2163306/2163306_Thumb.jpg
 Brilliant.

An officer in the Metropolitan Police Department’s first district “dry-fired” an unloaded weapon at the head of another officer during a roll-call meeting on Saturday afternoon, possibly under orders from a sergeant as part of a training exercise, four MPD sources tell WUSA9.

Those sources say a Sergeant later told officers in the room that they had secretly ordered the officer to unload his weapon and then pretend to fire on his colleague as part of a “training exercise” on situational awareness. The officer then pulled the trigger of the unloaded weapon while pointing it at the head of an officer until it audibly clicked, the sources say.

Both the officer who allegedly fired the weapon and the sergeant who allegedly ordered him are assigned to regular duties, pending an internal affairs investigation, MPD spokesman Sean Hickman tells WUSA9.

“I can tell you there are about seven different versions of the incident that are out there,” MPD Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters on Monday. “I’m not sure which or how many of those that you’ve heard, but I prefer to wait until I see some facts and some direct statements of what happened before I make a judgment.”

Who said law enforcement officers are better trained than the public?  I know the officer probably needs his/her paycheck, but I think my response would have been something akin to “Are you SERIOUS?”, and if the response were in the affirmative, QUIT ON THE SPOT!
Should there have been an ‘accident’, I’m certain the officer in question would have used the defense “I was just following orders!” – a defense we’ve heard before, somewhere.

High Power Field Strip

from The Firearm Blog

I loved my Browning!  Sadly, she was lost in the vault theft some years back.  😦

Some folks acquire firearms without knowledge of their specific manual of arms, or even how to strip them down for basic maintenance or cleaning.

This showed up in my email from TFB, so, I thought I’d pass it along.

(Yes – it’s ‘older’ technology, but JMB was a genius!  Folks like Gaston Glock stand on his shoulders!)

Apologies…

In planning some changes to my blog, I inadvertently hit a wrong button, and it changed!

Sigh.

Of course, now I need to research where I made the error, and make corrections.

And, I’ve an appointment this morning (!) so, off I go!

Later.

Person-Of-Interest, Part Deux

Those of you who know me, or who have read this blog at any length, know I love TV, movies, etc.  In spite of this, I’ve come late to the table on many popular shows (original Star Trek, Firefly/Serenity to name a couple) and am now dogged by the idea that anything I truly enjoy is doomed to be canceled.

Person-Of-Interest, for example.

Here is a show with interesting characters, good acting and an engaging theme with caught my interest a few years ago.

The government (and others) are spying on us ALL through public surveillance cameras, traffic cameras, ATMs, personal computers, security systems, cellular telephones ad infinitum, and crunching the data to use for their ‘purposes’ (propaganda, ‘nudging’, marketing, politics).

The lead actor (Jim Caviezel) who plays a spec-ops former CIA guy in the show, even took it upon himself to train with Navy Seals near his home to learn realistic weapon handling and unarmed combat techniques.

Sounds fantastic, right? (from the root word fantasy)

Now, approaching the delayed beginning of Season Five, we’ve been told this will be a truncated season (13 episodes) starting later this year, and probably the last.

Damn.

I’ve never written a letter to a production company (as an adult – I remember writing Sky King when I was age 7 for an autograph!  :-)) but I am considering writing one now.

But, a comment by another fan of the show on an entertainment website may have said it all:

Well, maybe it is not the rating but the subject matter this show speaks about – not so much science fiction at all anymore. Better shut up.

Sigh.

Warts And All…

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY TO THINK ABOUT…….December 29, 2015 marks the 125th Anniversary of the murder of 297 Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. These 297 people, in their winter camp, were murdered by federal agents and members of the 7th Cavalry who had come to confiscate their firearms “for their own safety and protection”. The slaughter began after the majority of the Sioux had peacefully turned in their firearms. The Calvary began shooting, and managed to wipe out the entire camp. 200 of the 297 victims were women and children. About 40 members of the 7th Cavalry were killed, but over half of them were victims of fratricide from the Hotchkiss guns of their overzealous comrades-in-arms.

TWENTY members of the 7th Cavalry’s death squad, were deemed “National Heroes” and were awarded the Medal of Honor for their acts of [cowardice] heroism.

We hear very little of Wounded Knee today. It is usually not mentioned in our history classes or books. What little that does exist about Wounded Knee is normally a sanitized “Official Government Explanation”. And there are several historically inaccurate depictions of the events leading up to the massacre, which appear in movie scripts and are not the least bit representative of the actual events that took place that day.

Wounded Knee was among the first federally backed gun confiscation attempts in United States history. It ended in the senseless murder of 297 people.

Before you jump on the emotionally charged bandwagon for gun-control, take a moment to reflect on the real purpose of the Second Amendment, the right of the people to take up arms in defense of themselves, their families, and property in the face of invading armies or an oppressive government. The argument that the Second Amendment only applies to hunting and target shooting is asinine. When the United States Constitution was drafted, “hunting” was an everyday chore carried out by men and women to put meat on the table each night, and “target shooting” was an unheard of concept. Musket balls were a precious commodity and were certainly not wasted on “target shooting”. The Second Amendment was written by people who fled oppressive and tyrannical regimes in Europe, and it refers to the right of American citizens to be armed for defensive purposes, should such tyranny arise in the United States.

As time goes forward, the average citizen in the United States continually loses little chunks of personal freedom or “liberty”. Far too many times, unjust gun control bills were passed and signed into law under the guise of “for your safety” or “for protection”. The Patriot Act signed into law by G.W. Bush, was expanded and continues under Barack Obama. It is just one of many examples of American citizens being stripped of their rights and privacy for “safety”. Now, the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is on the table, and will, most likely be attacked to facilitate the path for the removal of our firearms, all in the name of “our safety”.

Before any American citizen blindly accepts whatever new firearms legislation that is about to be doled out, they should stop and think about something for just one minute-
Evil does exist in our world. It always has and always will. Throughout history evil people have committed evil acts. In the Bible one of the first stories is that of Cain killing Abel. We can not legislate “evil” into extinction. Good people will abide by the law, and the criminal element will always find a way around it.

Evil exists all around us, but looking back at the historical record of the past 200 years, across the globe, where is “evil” and “malevolence” most often found? In the hands of those with the power, the governments. That greatest human tragedies on record and the largest loss of innocent human life can be attributed to governments. Who do the governments always target? “Scapegoats” and “enemies” within their own borders…but only after they have been disarmed to the point where they are no longer a threat. Ask any Native American, and they will tell you it was inferior technology and lack of arms that contributed to their demise. Ask any Armenian why it was so easy for the Turks to exterminate millions of them, and they will answer “We were disarmed before it happened”. Ask any Jew what Hitler’s first step prior to the mass murders of the Holocaust was- confiscation of firearms from the people.

Wounded Knee is the prime example of why the Second Amendment exists, and why we should vehemently resist any attempts to infringe on our Rights to Bear Arms. Without the Second Amendment we will be totally stripped of any ability to defend ourselves and our families.

As horrific as this, and other injustices were (are?), I still believe in The Constitutional Republic of The United States.
Warts and all.
The people who keep bring up past injustices to inflame the populus to change it to a more perfect Union are clueless.
We have the means to enable such change – through the voting box, or perhaps more extreme?

Man Barricades Himself In Own Home

Nothing happens, no one cares! (G. Carlin)  🙂

Reportedly, a man died, and wasn’t discovered for several days.  Upon inventorying his belongings, authorities discovered 1200 firearms!

Sacre’ Bleu!

Here’s the story, as reported in the L.A. Times.

And here’s the money quote…

“We don’t think the weapons are illegal. We are taking them for public safety,” said Sgt. David Craig of the LAPD’s gang and narcotics division. He said investigators removed the weapons to ensure the ammunition and guns wouldn’t be stolen from the home.

So the guy had a bunch of firearms – SO WHAT?  Then he died of cancer.

This is what Say Uncle said…

The real story is the press correctly identifies an arsenal

Sorry Unc., I prefer a ‘collection’.

It’s less pejorative.

Remember Federal Blackmail?

You must lower your speed limits to continue to receive federal highway funds!  And numerous other examples…

Well, they are at it, again!

Because, of course, these are all signs of evil!

And we should ignore paint over sanitize history.
