or sick comedy. I don’t know which.
One if my many maladies is I have arthritis. It seems to rear it’s ugly head in colder, more humid weather.
Fortunately, I live in a (mostly) dry desert. 😛
I went to the grocery yesterday, and reviewed the over-the-counter preparations. (A through G?)
Most were made of menthol, along with some kind of delivery system – cream, aerosol, etc. I already have some Icy (something) at home. For me, it doesn’t work as advertised, it just burns. 😦
Then I saw this cream made with emu oil. Another preparation which had been recommended to me. Preparation E?
I happily spent the $12 and took the 4 ounce jar home.
Remember TRIOPENIN? From SNL? The pill bottle of pain medication impossible for the elderly person to open, eventually ending in a hammer breaking the bottle?
I thought it was real!
This simple jar with a simple screw-top lid. Instructions state do not use if the safety seal is broken. If I could unscrew the lid, I could verify the seal was intact, or not!
Banging the jar lid on the counter. Pounding the lid with the jar upside down. Submerging the top of the jar in hot water to make it expand. Vice grips and a large ‘C’ clamp.
I began wondering if some teenager superglued the lid shut, as a painful prank?
EVENTUALLY, some combination of the efforts above prevailed, coupled with prying between the jar and the lid with the sharp edge of a Buck-type knife.
THEN, of course, I had to remove the safety seal. No, it had not been molested.
And, I finally got to the emu-oil preparation. Initial trials are moderately successful. We will see about the longer term.
I’m now wondering if ALL the jars are similarly sealed?
not this brand
FTC – I purchased the cream, then had to painfully wrestle with it, just to get it open. That should be enough for you.
Don’t let old people vote:
GQ Magazine went all out
, producing: “WE SHOULD BAN OLD PEOPLE FROM VOTING”. Writing about “them” as if the older generations are some foreign species, the reasons given by the author included:
“The EU referendum result will have less effect on older people”; “Over 65s read the Daily Mail”; “There was no ‘golden age’ of Britain”; and “We take pensioners’ driving licences away… why not their right to vote?”
It’s time for the Government to dissolve the People and elect a new one …
When did a men’s ‘fashion’ magazine begin taking it upon itself to dictate public policy ideas? And, why should I care?
Gol’ darn young whippersnappers!
Obviously, useful idiots of Lenin will suffer more, if they cannot get more freebies from government. And, as they will live longer (in their nice, fashionable clothes) it only stands to ‘reason’ that they want the old folks disenfranchised…
Didn’t they ever see Logan’s Run? Don’t they realize one day they will get old?
Back-in-the-day (the 60’s), if news happened during the day, we had to wait until the 5:30 Huntley/Brinkley Report to hear about it.
Unless it was of a catastrophic nature, like the JFK assassination. Then, someone who had been listening to a transistor radio passed the news along word-of mouth. (The school janitor?) And people with TVs ran to them for the latest reports. Because, not everyone had a TV!
Otherwise, if the evening news had been missed, it was the next morning’s Arizona Republic that brought the news. Usually bad – because news of a good nature is rarely news.
Fast-forward (another antiquated term from VHS tape days) to this post-Internet era. I’ve a smartphone which I am rarely without. She lives in my right, front pocket (having a fused hip means my back pocket isn’t a good idea for access) with my keys, .38 speed strip and my Blur lockblade knife. (The .38 S&W snub is in my LEFT front pocket, in a pocket holster, me being sinestral, and all!)
I keep my smartphone on, because, why not? She bleeps and chirps with receipt of texts, emails and the latest headlines. (I do put her on vibrate or mute as appropriate!) And sometimes she even rings announcing a telephone call! 🙂 Or a specific ringtone advising me of particular callers, like my roomie or close friends. Roomie’s ringtone is Moonlight Sonata, and Biff’s is the Peanuts theme!
Which brings me to my point (finally!)
Biff has a smartphone, but he doesn’t keep it on. Doesn’t use it for spur-of-the-moment research, or shopping or to-do lists. He doesn’t use it for email or texts, either. Or receipt of the latest news!
He uses it as a telephone, when he chooses to have it turned-on.
And, I razz him mercilessly about this. The term Luddite has been bandied about.
Why have a smartphone, if one isn’t going to use it as such?
He says he doesn’t want to be that connected. And usually leaves it in his car, anyway!
We met for coffee the Saturday evening last, and were having our usual conversations, and I brought up the death earlier in the day of Justice Scalia.
And, he didn’t know about it – he hadn’t heard! And he’s a radio news guy!
(I’d received a notification minutes after it had been reported, from three news sources!)
To be fair, he hadn’t worked that day.
So, which is better? – to be voluntarily ignorant of the day’s events, to choose to call only when one makes that choice, or to be tethered to the electronic instantaneous (or nearly so) news cycle? And at the mercy of people who choose to call, whenever?
Being already a volunteer for the tethering, my opinion in the matter is skewed one direction. Much like having a P.C. at home with a router, I don’t think I could revert to dial-up.
Or no Internet access at all…
So, which is better?
(Not mentioning potential for brain cancer and/or government surveillance/tracking, because so doing would further muddy the issue!)
EXCLUSIVE: The Fourth Estate has learned that Freddy Gray’s life-ending injuries to his spine may have possibly been the result of spinal and neck surgery that he allegedly received a week before he was arrested, not from rough excessively rough treatment or abuse from police.
The Fourth Estate has contacted sources who allege that Freddy Gray received spinal and neck surgery a week before we was arrested, and was allegedly receiving a large structured settlement from Allstate Insurance. The surgery is allegedly related to a car accident in which Gray was involved.Sources allege that Gray also attempted to refinance his structured settlement into one lump sum payment through Peachtree Funding.
If this is true, then it is possible that Gray’s spinal injury resulting from his encounter with the Baltimore Police was not the result of rough-handling or abuse, but rather a freak accident that occurred when Gray should have been at home resting, not selling drugs.
Not that obtaining and acting on FACTS has anything to do with the destruction and blackmail of the
protesters violent criminal thieves who are holding Baltimore hostage!
I’m all about protest – it’s a fine American tradition. But arson, criminal damage, assault and burglary aren’t exactly a good way to convey the message you think the authorities acted inappropriately.
I’m also guessing the violent criminal thieves also don’t understand irony…
President Obama promised us the the most transparent administration, ever.
Yeah, not so much.
I’ve been reading some news accounts proclaiming (at the time) that Obama would be so much better than President Bush at responding to Freedom of Information Act requests…
Then, I saw this:
White House office to delete its FOIA regulations
WASHINGTON — The White House is removing a federal regulation that subjects its Office of Administration to the Freedom of Information Act, making official a policy under Presidents Bush and Obama to reject requests for records to that office.
That pretty much states all you need, although it might behoove you to go to the link.
So Bush AND Obama – peas in a pod?
At least as far as openness is concerned.
Not that we believed Bush to be terrific, and Obama to be less than terrific…
What has happened to The Republic?

d. all of the above!
One of The President’s top advisors is an Iranian born militant progressive. His Attorney General supports the New Black Panthers. Another advisor was one of the leaders of The Weathermen, involved in bombings and killings – he is completely unrepentant for these acts. His (former) pastor of 20 years is a Black Separatist Revolutionary.
There was a time folks with these kind of credentials would have been shunned by academia and the political world. At the very least. Now they are feted. (fetid?)
From Mark Knapp…
re: Angela Davis
In 1970 Davis was implicated in the an armed invasion of a Marin County, California courtroom. Judge Haley, the prosecuting assistant district attorney, and two jurors were removed from the courtroom at gun point.
Judge Harold Haley’s was blasted in the head with a sawed-off shotgun owned by Davis. She then fled using aliases and had disguised herself when she was arrested two months later in New York City.
At her 1972 trial, Davis acted as her own attorney. Thus, she could not be cross-examined. She presented a number of alibi witnesses, almost all Communist friends, who testified that she had been with them in Los Angeles playing Scrabble at the time of the Marin slaughter. Prosecution witnesses who placed her in Marin were dismissed by Davis and her fellow attorneys as being unable to accurately identify blacks – because they were white.
When Davis was acquitted many of the jurors went to her victory party!
She now has her doctorate (!), teaches at The University of California, and lectures, nationwide. For a big (capitalist) fee. I’m certain she laughs all the way to the bank, a communist, terrorist laugh.
…she recently spoke to our community at the invitation of the Federal Way Public School District, raises the issue of whether she has ever actually changed any of her views regarding violent revolution.
Did the Federal Way School District know any of this history before they invited her? Did anyone on the Board object? Has Dr. Davis ever expressed any remorse for the sorrow she brought to so many lives?
THESE are the kind of people who have wormed their way into schools, universities and governments, pushing an anti-American agenda. As Glenn Beck said, (speaking of Van Jones) First, we were on the outside, now, we are on the inside.
Making law, policy, and destroying everything in their wake.
And they are supported not just by like-minded people, but also well-meaning people, who have no understanding of the agenda they are bringing to the table. People who vote for someone out of fairness, or ‘leveling the playing field’, or even guilt – supporting the underdog.
We’re not going to change the minds of the communist, terrorist, criminal, self-serving fellow travelers of Angela Davis, Van Jones, Valerie Jarrett, and Bill Ayers.
We might be able to change the minds of people who believe things they say, though.
But, like reversing the Progressive policies of the past 100 years, it’s going to take time and patience.
with the help of factual reporting.
Bob Owens shared with us the sins-of-omission, as committed by CBS ‘News’. (and also reportedly PBS, et al) As well as sins of commission.
It seems they are going out of their way to blame the Tea Party movement for yesterday’s atrocities at the Boston Marathon. With no facts as yet in to support their rant.
Of course, this is not news. Much of the mainstream media has been anti-Tea Party since their inception. Remember the claims of racist epithets and spitting toward liberal Congress folks? Remember the proof of these acts? Neither do I.
They’ve scoured Tea Party events, looking for something on which to hang their hats of hate and violence. And found very few provable hat racks. I don’t think we can say the same for the leftist/anarchist OWS movement.
I believe much of this comes from two directions. Those folks who truly believe in the vision of the President – and anyone who disagrees with him must be racist. And the members of the media who laud leftist causes all day – excluding the principles on which this Nation was founded. Like the Constitution.
Define irony – Members of the press who beat the drum of the First Amendment all day about their right to write whatever they please. Including supporting an agenda which leads to restriction of that same free press.
SO…the roomie and I sometimes frequent a neighborhood watering hole cum eatery. The beer is cheap and the food (while not Brigid worthy) is pretty good. Above standard bar fare (e.g. bacon-wrapped salmon on a bed of risotto!).
But they have the ubiquitous AZ statute-approved sign for hoplophobes posted upon entering:
Which some unidentified patrons ignore. Unidentified to protect the guilty. Otherwise, if unposted, one could be armed, not consume alcohol, and remain legal. Your State law may very.
Fast backward to the other early evening.
sample, not as actually worn
Roomie and I find a booth, order a couple of beers and food, and she takes note of the pool/poker area behind me. There’s a guy wearing a frock coat, a tricorn hat (!) and what appears to be a cutlass!! The coat kinda-sorta covers said cutlass, some of the time, but no attempt is being made to conceal it.
Now this irritated my roomie, as certainly the Arizona bar statute referred to lethal weaponry, not just firearms. (it doesn’t – just guns!) Ignoring the fact that some of the aforementioned folks were carrying firearms and knives, concealed. SHHH!
But the other patrons and bar staff didn’t seem to notice or object to said cutlass, or the tricorn hat. Nor did they object to the folks carrying concealed guns and knives. Of course, they didn’t know about those. After a time, the swordsman left. No one knows when the other patrons departed.
I was unable to see if Mr. Tricorn had his trusty steed double-parked, or what?
Not our boy, by a longshot!
