As recounted here in previous episodes, I LIKE movies and TV.
Also recounted, I don’t always access current stuff, i.e I didn’t watch Star Trek (TOS) in prime time; the mini-series John Adams until years after the fact.
So it was with The Wire. Dave (the mechanic) recommended it highly. I don’t think I had HBO when it was first broadcast…
We found ourselves ‘between seasons’ on regular, commercial television. And had been re-running shows we liked (ranging from Friends to Person-of-Interest) until we started mumbling the dialog under our breath.
Thank God for ‘The Hopper™’!
It was time for something new, to us at least.
And we remembered The Wire…
Five years, sixty episodes. Gritty inner city drama about the workings of the police, unions, organized crime and politics.
Sax and violins galore.
With no censor (it was HBO, after all)!
If I had $1 for every time I heard the word M…..F…..
Well, you get the idea.
Well cast and acted. A tight script which kept you guessing. Some good guys who were bad – some misguided. Some bad guys trying to be good. Others just evil.
The Internet tells us many of the background cast we actual people from the street. I’m certain this lowered production costs, but also added to the realism.
I recommend it. But make certain the children are asleep in their beds.
In another State.
Lest they listen and start repeating M…..F……
Or the ubiquitous ‘N’ word!
I’ve not been ‘on a date’ in some time. It’s simply a matter of logistics – I’ve no extraneous funds and my car is a beater with no air conditioning.
The fact that I don’t travel is any circles with available women has nothing to do with it!
I was thinking this morning about a few of my more memorable dates in the distant past. Some with fondness; some not-so-much.
I used to like to attend the cinema. There were many first-run films each week, lots of theaters from which to choose, and who doesn’t like sitting in the dark with a young woman? (this was in my 20’s – before I had been married, and subsequently divorced).
Now, of course, there are fewer movies and movie houses. And one may sit at home in one’s skivvies and watch videos until the cows come home, with beer, pizza, and (if one is so lucky) company.
AND, one may pause to go to the bathroom!
Times have changed.
ANYWAY, I remembered a couple of dates. One was a later Hitchcock film. I did (and DO love Alfred Hitchcock). My date said she did as well. Were post-date antics in the offing?
Sadly NO. The film was Frenzy. A film of a serial killer rapist, made in London. I think it was the first time Hitch actually exposed breasts on film. Following a violent rape and strangulation. Hardly something to arouse a normal young woman to later romance.
Another time, a former girlfriend returned to town and looked me up. We went out a few times, and I had hope of rekindling the romance. But, it was not to be…
She had mentioned she liked Burt Reynolds. There was a new film out with him in it. I thought “Hey! Maybe this will get things going again?”
Hardly. The film was Deliverance. You remember – dueling banjos, homosexual rape?
I just couldn’t get a break!
(as an aside, the consummate actor Ned Beatty was the rape victim here. I’ve wondered about the audition…“Hey, pages 18 and 19 are missing? Don’t worry about it, Ned.)
(Four reasons to bring back Firefly!)
I’ll be in my bunk…
Or rather a series of protests across the country (and the World), following the Presidential inauguration. Reportedly in significant numbers.
What exactly was being protested, and by whom?
It appeared to be largely women. Protesting Donald Trump’s history of misogyny. Because of a locker-room style comment he made eleven years ago. Some protesters showed class, by dressing like this:
To be fair, not everyone was dressed this way.
I did notice most of the ‘notables’ involved in the protests were ‘left of center’, demanding continued funding for Planned Parenthood (as an example), and more government funding for all their concerns (like free health care for all), and consisted of folks like (from this AP report):
(…) Pop diva Madonna made an unannounced appearance Saturday in Washington, joining hundreds of thousands of protesters who rallied for women’s rights in defiance of Trump.
Other celebrities at the massive demonstration included actresses Scarlett Johansson, Ashley Judd and America Ferrera, filmmaker Michael Moore and the feminist icon Gloria Steinem.
I did notice conservative women were absent – perhaps discouraged from appearing?
A friend’s protest sign:
Part of the protest was regarding protection of the environment. Here is one photo following a protest:
I’m certain more government money/labor will be needed to clean up after the protesters.
But, going to the government teat seems to be their fallback. Wait! Can I say that? Great – I’ll probably have women dressed as boobies outside my door, now…
Naw, I’m not as important at The President. 🙂
(You all know I support legal protest – it’s a fine American tradition. I didn’t see any reports of violence or criminal damage. Good for you, ladies – and Michael Moore.)
I think I was first employed as a private security guard in 1972. Last, in 1987. For about six different companies over the years. Interspersed with being a process server, private investigator, security consultant and numerous other jobs.
Consequently, sometimes my memories conjoin, and sometimes fade. Sometimes, they make me cry (like restricting access to the urgent care facility to allow access for a seriously ill cancer patient – because the cancer made them stink!), and other times they make me chuckle.
Why haven’t I posted about this funny ever before? I’d forgotten about it. A recent course of Nyquil™ helped me to remember! 😛
I was a graveyard shift guard for an urgent care facility three days. And substitute guard supervisor for two. Often filling in for sick, ill, and lazy guards. And those who just decided to quit at the last minute.
(If I couldn’t bribe someone else to fill in…)
One of the offices for the urgent care was adjacent to a popular stage theater/movie house. And sometimes, the audience parking would bleed over into our lot. Our job, as security, was to make certain they simply didn’t restrict patient parking.
Usually no issue or biggie.
But this was Phoenix’s Sombrero Playhouse! Where much of central Phoenix ‘old’ money would go to watch plays, and sometimes first-run films. Then they’d go up 7th Avenue to The Islands for a nice dinner out.
Generally nice, older folks who didn’t want to be annoyed. And had money to enforce that.
And, I was a conservative, somewhat sheltered young lad. Just trying to do my job.
As a last minute aside, I was told there was a new movie at the Sombrero. And some of the patrons ‘dressed in costume and makeup’ to see the film. I was not to express alarm at their ‘getup’.
I’d not heard of the film. It was THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!
So, a guy pulls in and asks me if it’s okay to park in the clinic lot. I apologize and say no. The first of many times that evening to people who looked (somewhat) like this:
I didn’t express alarm, but did have to stifle laughter!
And my boundaries were again widened. Not because I wanted them to be, necessarily.
And Rocky Horror became an underground hit. And took over ‘Midnight Movies’ at my nearby theater, The Valley Art. The used to run indy films, then it became nothing but Rocky Horror every Friday and Saturday midnight!
Times were a changin’…
(from my friend Borepatch)
I strongly recommend that you do NOT buy the My Friend Cayla doll, the i-Que robot, or the Barbie Hello Dream House as gifts due to a grotesquely dangerous security flaw in the toy’s design.
I often rant about poor security in products and how “security wasn’t an afterthought, it wasn’t thought of at all.” Mostly it’s about something that is unlikely to effect most of all y’all. This time is different – here are some toys that can endanger children, and I STRONGLY recommend that you do NOT buy these as gifts this holiday season.
My Friend Cayla is a doll with embedded voice recognition technology similar to Apple’s Siri, that can interact with children. It not only listens to what the child says but can respond appropriately.
While it’s somewhat concerning that the doll “phones home” over the Internet for the voice recognition to work, the issue isn’t that it’s listening in on your kid. Mind you, I find this more than a little creepy, but I remember when there were only 3 TV channels.
The danger is that the doll is Bluetooth enabled, and the Bluetooth is completely unprotected. What this means is that anyone within Bluetooth range (which at 100 yards is actually further than many think) can connect to the doll and start talking to your child as she plays.
Let me say that again – Joe Shmoe in the park across from your house can connect to your little Princess’ doll and have a chat. There’s a video of this, although they’re wrong to call it a “hack”. It’s simply use of the functionality as it was designed.
Also using the exact same technology with exactly the same flaw is the i-Que robot: this isn’t just a threat to little girls.
Unconfirmed reports also include the Barbie Hello Dream House. I don’t know whether this is vulnerable to remote Bluetooth access, and it’s almost certain that nothing definitive will be published on this before the holidays. Given that I recommend that you don’t buy this, either.
This seems to me to be bordering on criminal negligence by the companies involved (certainly My Friend Cayla and i-Que; possibly Mattel). The idea that a child’s toy could be released that would allow someone to remotely talk with your child his his or her own bedroom is mind bogglingly stupid.
To reiterate, I strongly recommend that you do NOT buy the My Friend Cayla doll, the i-Que robot, or the Barbie Hello Dream House as gifts due to a grotesquely dangerous security flaw in the toy’s design.
Anyone remember “My name is Talky Tina” from Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone? These toys take that to a whole new level.
It’s been said, politics makes strange bedfellows. I’m not a fan of this guy, but, if he can make a living spewing juvenile, naughty drivel on pay-to-play radio – so be it.
I’ve no idea (nor do I particularly care) about his other political views, but this did appear on my radar…
Of course, being the libertine he pretends to be on radio would normally attract the LEFT (progressives, democrats, etc.) but I suspect this throws them for a loop…
(from Free North Carolina)
Howard Stern applauded President-elect Donald Trump’s policy which would give concealed carry permit holders from every state the right to carry legally in any other state Tuesday on his SiriusXM radio show.
During his campaign, Trump told his supporters he believed in the right to concealed carry of firearms for eligible citizens and talked about supporting a national reciprocity policy for all legal concealed carry holders across the United States.
The Silicon Graybeard (not a wild-eyed conspiracy guy!) brings us (in part)
Translates as “Let justice be done, though the world perish”. Apparently it’s not really a phrase from the Roman Empire but from a book in 1563. Wikipedia says:
This sentence was the motto of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, probably originating from Johannes Jacobus Manlius’s book Loci Communes (1563). It characterizes an attitude, which wants to provide justice at any price. Its first documented use in English literature was about half a century later.
Hat Tip to The Arts Mechanical for this information, in a piece called Nightmare Fuel, and it really is reading that’s not for the squeamish. He, in turn, links to a number of sources that are reporting on the truly disgusting things going on in Clinton Foundation’s universe. First a link to True Pundit:
BREAKING BOMBSHELL: NYPD Blows Whistle on New Hillary Emails: Money Laundering, Sex Crimes with Children, Child Exploitation, Pay to Play, Perjury
It’s. Not. Just. Bill. It’s all of them. From Reddit’s The_Donald forum :
BREAKING: I believe I have connected a convicted child abductor who was caught stealing children in Haiti with the Clintons
But wait! There’s more! (Sickeningly)
I truly believe the Clintons and their entourage to be evil. Morally bankrupt.
Even if none of the above allegations (many courtesy of Wikileaks) are based in fact.
Humans want to believe the worst about persons whom they already despise. It makes it easier to put them in the why would I want to elect THEM column.
Not forgetting about Benghazi, the Clinton Foundation, Hillary’s gun control plans, the illegal sale of plutonium to Russia, arming ISIS, the countless mysterious deaths and intimidations, Bill’s serial rapes…
(I could go on – but I have to go take some Pepto now.)
This does NOT mean I am actively supporting the Republican candidate!
He may be a pig and has used inappropriate language, and at best is a populist (see Huey Long
Libertarians? Two governors with scant international experience? One of who is a rebranded, gun-controlling Democrat?! And the Presidential candidate supports global-warming taxes?!
(I’m not even mentioning the Greens or the Commies… I know, I’m being redundant)
So VOTE. Vote not with your heart, but with your brain.
THE REPUBLIC’S SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON IT.
I hope to update today’s quote, funny and beauty later.
(Things appear to have been resolved. We now take you back to the original blog, which is already in progress…)
