MST3K

(that’s GEEK for Mystery Science Theater 3000!)  😅

As most of you know, I love TV and movies.  And, being disabled (with limited funds), I am constantly on the prowl for something different to watch.

(For something to do besides hang out on the Internet.)

Some years ago, I heard about MST3K, and was lucky enough to have access to it.

THE PREMISE (wikilink)

Hard to imagine this came about from a tight crew of messed up college guys talking back to the TV while watching cheesy movies!

Now, in it’s (third?) incarnation on Netflix.

A (short) example:

If your geeky, and in need of a good guffaw, I highly recommend it.

It is NOT for the serious!  😛

♫ In The Summer, When It Sizzles…♫

(Yes, I know, it’s not even SPRING, yet!)

A couple of weeks ago, it was cold and rainy, as it should be in February.  Highs in the 50’s and 60s.

BUT, we do have occasions of warmer weather spurts, followed by cooling off periods, usually culminating in the first 100° temperature around the beginning of May (sometimes a day or two earlier.  April?)

I remember a month of so ago, my roommate asking me to turn up the heat a click, as she was ‘freezing’.  (The can be difficult to gauge accurately, as our thermostat resembles a Quija board, and she has her own internal thermostatic issues.  And my room, most Westerly in the house, gets the most Sun and heat – making it 5-10 degrees warmer in warmer months (and colder in colder months)!

It appears we are beginning an up-tic:  88° Sunday (today), then 90°,92°,93°,92°,93°,95°,94° ! (per Yahoo Weather)

(My apologies, Rev. Paul, Brigid and Gloria!)

The brain trust on the street (aka the Chicken Littles) have begun proclaiming with it being this hot so early, that we are in for a scorching Summer, as is one may extrapolate the weather that far out! (attention Chicken Littles – most weather readers have enough trouble getting tomorrow’s temp correct!  And you can predict 100 years in advance?  Yeah.  Global WarmingRI-IGHT!)

Like it’s going to be 150° in the shade in July.  Silly geese.

Everyone knows it most likely won’t exceed 122°, 123°…

YIKES!

(Hopefully, this won’t happen until July, if ever!)

PHOENIX (CBS5) –

Do you remember the hottest day in Phoenix history?

It was on June 26, 1990, a day not easily forgotten as the mercury hit an all-time high temperature of 122 degrees.

Okay, June then!

From The Desk Of YOUR NAME HERE

When I was a kid, and moving into my teen years, I did magic as a hobby (and later, semi-professionally).  As recounted in these pages.  (Magic, The Magic Club)

And, pre-Internet, there were mail-order catalogs with all manner of tricks and novelties available from across the nation.  Even the world.  And I would spend my meager allowance on as much as I could afford.

One magic and novelty company (Elbee Magic Co.) had a huge catalog, and included among the trick card decks and whoopee cushions were things like vinyl record albums, and promotional posters.  Showing folks like The Beatles, live at the London Palladium featuring YOUR NAME HERE!

How cool was that?  I could get a wall poster or even a vinyl record printed as though I were co-starring with The Beatles!  Featuring Guffaw!

I never did, though.  I was more interested in getting the playing cards.

And, time passed, and the magic company eventually went out-of-business.  And I thought, so much for THAT idea…

Here it is 2016.  The Internet is in full force, and I can (and do) send emails to politicians I hope listen to me and vote accordingly.

Yeah, right…

Sometimes, I receive a response.  Like those from Senator McCain’s office a month or two after the fact!

My congressperson is Kyrsten Sinema (D).  Aside from sometimes supporting the troops (she reportedly comes from a military family), she mostly is a big government liberal.  A (D) after her name.  Quelle surprise.

But being significantly younger than McCain, I had expectations she would be more tech-savvy.  At least it generally only takes her a few days to a week to respond to emails I send.  Even though in matters of individual liberty we rarely agree.  Gun control, anyone?

Here is the last (form) letter I received from her (in part).  In fact, I received TWO copies.  So much for tech-savvy…

Mr. Guffaw
Wrong Street Address
Flotsam’s Mistake, AZ XXXXX-XXXX

Dear Mr. Guffaw,

Thank you for contacting me about TOPIC. I always appreciate hearing from Arizonans about issues facing our state and country. It is important that we have conversations about topics that are important to you and your family, and I hope you will continue to reach out to me to share your perspectives and suggestions.

Thank you for contacting me about TOPIC?!  Seriously?

Considering this was all electronic, one would think at least the address would be correct?

Maybe I’ll send the next one from YOUR NAME HERE.

It would be fun getting a letter addressed to YOUR NAME HERE, regarding TOPIC!

😛

(apologies to G. Carlin for using his terrific fictional town name Flotsam’s Mistake, in lieu of the real town.)

No Right To Concealed Carry!?

from Free North Carolina

Via Iver

A federal appeals court says people do not have a right to carry concealed weapons in public under the 2nd Amendment.

An 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued the ruling Thursday.

The panel says law enforcement officials can require applicants for a concealed weapons permit to show they are in immediate danger or otherwise have a good reason for a permit beyond self-defense.

More @ Fox
It was bound to happen.  While the Supreme Court affirmed firearms ownership to be an individual right, it said so in the home.  There had to be a case further defining the terms.  Of course, in this post-Scalia court, the fear is that the eight Justices (or 9, with a progressive appointee) will deny you, me and every other law-abiding citizen their natural right!
Time will tell…
Speaking for myself, I believe weapon possession, ownership, and method-of-carry should be entirely up to the individual!  This solves the CCW vs. OC debate.  It is NOT the business of the State to decide what or how, or when or where I can so do!
And (while we’re at it) didn’t Miller (1939 – the case affirming the 1934 National Firearms Act – full auto, etc.) mention commonly-carried military, individually-operated arms are the purview of the Second Amendment?
I call this ‘the Stinger in the basement’ principle.
(Yeah, I know, I’m rambling.  I’m tired this morning)

Gender Inequality

…or at least equal opportunity for yuck!

I’m speaking about equal opportunity for MEN here.

I’ve been taking out the trash and the garbage my entire life!  Or, at least since I was able to walk, lift and receive an allowance.

My sister?  Nope.  And SHE, too, received an allowance.

Why the disparity?  I AM MALE!

Don’t you know – IT’S THE JOB OF THE MAN (OR BOY) TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH!

How do we know this?  Every woman – starting with my Mother and stepmother – said so!

And subsequent girlfriends and even the (now ex) wife!

And currently my female roommate!

WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?

Everyone in the house makes trash and garbage.  I don’t mind sharing the duty necessary to get it to the dumpster.  But, when did it become solely the purview of the MALE?

I tried the argument that if there were gender-specific jobs that she should take care of the house and make the meals and do the wash.

That didn’t go over so well…

And I also received the counter-argument that they had to suffer childbirth and other things feminine.  As if I created women to be that way!

garbage rights

It’s an argument with a woman.

Men lose, automatically.

Canadian Muslim Girl Goes on Mass Stabbing Spree – 8 Injured=> Authorities Baffled on Motive Behind Attack

Via Billy

stabbing canada

A 14 year-old Canadian girl went on a stabbing spree this week at Dunbarton High School in Pickering, Ontario.

Eight students were hurt in the attack.

Ambulances sit in front of Dunbarton High School following a multiple stabbing at the Pickering, Ont., high school on Feb. 23.

Police accused 14-year-old girl Z**** V**** of the crime.

Apparently, the political correctness disease either has moved up to Canuckistan, or migrated down from there to us.  In any case, this isn’t a dreaded ‘gun violence’ type attack, so it didn’t get much press here in Southern Canuckistan.
I intentionally edited out the (alleged) miscreant’s name, so as to not give her any more notoriety.

Appearances Can Be Deceiving

Things are seldom what they seem, skim milk masquerades as cream.  –  W. S. Gilbert

I saw a guy when I was at the store the other day.  And I recoiled.  Straggly, dirty hair, unkempt beard.  I didn’t get close enough, but I’d have bet my grocery money he smelled.

Of course, he might have been the kindest, sweetest gentleman on the planet!

I’ve gone to the store after working around the house and in the yard. Sweaty, dirty.  Unshaven.  With my Shao-Lin Temple style beard.  I’m certain, to the uninformed, I must appear as a derelict.

And I’d like to think I’m a good guy(?)

But, we all react to external appearances.  It’s in our DNA to do so.

Fast-forward to watching TV the other night.  The premiere of Chicago Med, completing the triumvirate of Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.  With some of the same crossover characters and episodes, I’m sure…

And you know me and my love of character actors!

And there’s this guy.  Tiny, wormy, the kind who makes my skin crawl, just by showing up.

And I think to myself, “I know this guy!  A great character actor – always plays the same slimy weasel!”

Then he is introduced on the show…

Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago!rahm

You remember, previously The President’s Chief-of-Staff, who returned back to the nest to run for Mayor.

The guy who (in)famously said, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.”

Sometimes, appearances are NOT deceiving!

S***** Shootings

There was yet another s***** shooting Thursday morning at Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff.  One student was killed.  Three injured.  For once, a suspect was arrested.  Turns out, it was the result of dispute between frat boys, not some random wacko as we are getting used being directed to hearing about.

And this is my point.  WHY is this being reported as another s***** shooting?  Would it have had the same reportage off campus?  Or if they were simply young men who were NOT in school?  And WHY are ‘we’ (the media) focused on s*****s, in particular?  And shootings altogether?

There are certainly more potential victims in shopping malls.  In hospitals.  OH, the age factor – innocent (college) youth.  How about day-care centers?

And other physical assaults.  Knives.  There have been numerous knife assaults on people in China.  And knife crime is rampant in the U.K.  Bombs?

These are in no way suggestions.

Is it the mass murder possibility that draws our attention?  Gun free zones (like Fort Hood – NOT a school)?

In many jurisdictions, possessing a firearm on a school campus is verboten.  Except by the ‘authorities’, of course.  We have seen how well that system has worked.

Using the moniker s***** is much the same as the term g** violence.  It draws attention to a specific venue and tool, to exclusion of all others!  Skewing the statistics.

And, recent FBI statistics show that a large increase in legal firearms ownership has decreased crime.  (I put ‘legal’ in there to exclude Chicago, wherein there were many more shootings and fatalities over the past XX weekends.  Involving gangs and stolen firearms.

Pick a weekend.

And most of those involved B**** on B**** violence, as long are we’re being exclusive.

But, ‘we’, ‘the media’ are reluctant to mention that…

I guess it’s considered racist.

Well, Here We Are, Again*

4 yearsToday is the FOURTH ANNIVERSARY of my writing (or submitting stolen borrowed content) for this blog.

I’ve posted something DAILY, along with a quote, a cartoon, a picture of a beauty, and a You Tube clip, EVERY DAY FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS!

Currently at 285,831 hits; 355 followers!

And, much to my continued surprise and delight, have not only attracted followers, but made friends!  Some of whom have communicated with me off-line, and sent money and gifts I probably don’t deserve.  And some with whom I’ve had the privilege of sending lead downrange!

You guys are amazing!

My BLOG MOTHERS™ (including Tam and Brigid) whose own postings spurred me on to blogging, are a great joy!  And terrific friends.

A special thank you to Borepatch, Murphy’s Law and Rev. Paul.  Without whom, etc.

I plan on continuing to annoy, confound, confuse and disturb for at least another year.

(Or until the powers-that-be decide I need muzzling!)

This weblog remains a work-in-progress.  As such, I’ve edited out some of the Usual Suspects who appear to be no longer blogging.  If I’ve done so in error or you have a new link, please advise.  My apologies.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR CONTINUED FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT!

Sometimes, Wisdom Is Just Wise

Via my friend Borepatch:

I find it very hard to argue with this:

Leftism has not won these arguments, the Left has simply punished those who argue on the other side: and when I say ‘The Left’ I mean particularly Leftist intellectuals in the mass media, public administration, the education system, and bureaucracies generally.

What can be concluded?

Our society is far more corrupt than people realize – why wouldn’t it be? What’s to stop it? But just how corrupt it is impossible to know, even approximately, since any ‘evidence’ consists of lies built upon lies.

Our society is far less smart than people realize, because good arguments are punished and demonized so bad arguments (or no arguments at all, but merely faked moral outrage/ scapegoat hatred) wins vital arguments by default.

In sum, we live in a world ruled by dumb liars.

Asa I oft respond to another wise Internet blogger ( e.g. Rev. Paul)…

AMEN!

"Round up the usual suspects."

In Loving Memory…
