As I grew up doing magic (eventually becoming semi-pro in my teens), I know many secrets – even if I cannot perform them personally. 😛
And, sadly, knowledge kinda ruins watching other magicians! I’m looking for the gimmick, misdirection, the gaffe, the secret – other than just enjoying the performance for entertainment sake.
It takes an unusual talent to keep me interested in the actual performance.
I am also an AZDPS certified/NRA trained instructor. And have trained people professionally in safe gun-handling and proper techniques. I also shot in IPSC competition for a short time.
The point being, while I’m no big-time trainer/shooter, I have been around.
And, this has spoiled many TV shows and movies for me.
It’s hard for me to suspend my disbelief when I see a magician perform poorly (and not on purpose for comedy, ala Carl Balantine!)
The same thing applies to gun handling from Hollywood.
In recent memory, the TV show 24, with the counter-terrorist expert Jack Bauer (played by Kiefer Sutherland) holding his pistol as a cup-and-saucer. Obviously, the set firearms trainer didn’t bother, or the actor didn’t care!
To be fair, Hollywood has generally improved in this area – Michael Mann with Miami Vice and Heat brought in weapons experts. We don’t see the ‘grabbing the wrist’ thing as much as we once did.
I’ve been binge watching Bosch on Amazon. Based on Michael Connolly’s book character, the plots are generally riveting and well acted. And Titus Welliver as the lead is pretty good, as a driven, ‘colors-outside-the-lines’ LAPD detective.
But, they had a big parking lot gun fight last night (Season 2), and many of the ‘professionals’ (both mobsters and cops) confused concealment with cover, and kept doing the jack-in-the-box thing (jumping up from behind something to return fire).
Smile for the camera!
It kinda took the wind out of my sails…
I plan on continuing to watch it, and hope the acting and the plot hide the poor action sequences.
Also, the lead character wears two extra 1911 magazines – placed backwards in the mag pouch (about half the time), making tactical reloads problematic!
Over 100 Ruger Pistols Stolen From Chicago Train Yard
It appears that over 100 Ruger pistols were stolen from a Chicago train yard by gangs in a one-time heist. Apparently, this is becoming a large problem in a city that prides itself on its strict gun control measures with over 150 firearms reported stolen from Chicago train yards since 2013. City leadership seems rather clueless about the root cause of the problem, one alderwomen was quoted as saying “How in the world are these kids getting these guns? I see them on Facebook. Everybody got guns. They can’t go purchase a gun, so where are they getting them from?”
It appears that train cars containing firearms are being specifically targeted somehow and is being looked into by the Chicago Police Department. The only way a firearm can be shipped by rail is through the United States Postal Service, most likely by Federal Firearms License holders due to shipping regulations.
You can read more about the theft over at the Fox News website where they covered it in much greater detail (with a political slant as you might imagine.) Even though the story smacks of political overtones, it is interesting to see what happens when a larger problem goes unnoticed while blaming the tool for actions.
Obviously, ‘they’ are ignoring the fact that they are purchasing guns through FFL-licensed dealers (after they obtain their Illinois FOIA card), and that the only way to curtail these purchases is further, more intrusive background checks!/(snark)MAROONS!
Teachers at a primary school in Sydney, Australia have been threatened with beheading and other violence from young Islamic students, prompting one of them to quit her job.
Students as young as those in Year 5, according to the Daily Telegraph, are making the violent threats and pressuring others to read the Koran at Punchbowl Public School in Sydney.
Documents given to the newspaper allege that three staff members have taken a leave of absence owing to stress, received counselling and been awarded compensation after bullying from Islamic students. MORE
Political Correctness is killing Europe, Asia, and has landed here.
Teachers not allowed to control their classrooms? Of course, we are seeing that here, as well. Just not to THIS degree (yet).
At least we have a Bill of Rights. Australia has none – although some of their States have ‘something’.
You know I’m all for property trained personnel with guns in schools. Australia, not so pro-gun. If a terrorist presents a viable threat against an administrator, teacher or student, there would be a solution here.
I don’t care is they are another student! If they are armed and refuse to stand down and be arrested…
I don’t get out much. Between my physical limitations (being disabled and in chronic pain, low income, crummy car) and my mental ones (I’m just not that interested in so doing), I’m lucky to get to the credit onion, grocery store, a cheap restaurant and perhaps the library each week.
This is one reason my Internet access and computer are so important to me! My ‘window on the World’, as it were!
I’m essentially the ubiquitous pajama boy, except much older, more educated, and living in a rented room upstairs instead of a stereotypical basement.
And I’m less liberal.
In one of my travels, I met a nice couple. A psychologist and her office manager husband (not that that’s of any importance to this post). Marlo and Jon are both pre-eminent in their field.
And Marlo comes from a long family history of motorcycle riders.
In 2008, she was in an accident which changed her life. And almost ended it. A car turned in front of her. (Can you see why she got my attention?)
While hospitalized and in rehab, she wrote a blog, which she later coalesced into a very personal book regarding her Chautauqua from a person with addictions to one in recovery. Her story included the courage, loyalty and love of her partner and husband Jon – whom I have personally nick-named St. Jon after reading her book.
Anyone who has had love, loss, ‘challenges’, courage and been fortunate enough to have others to help with those challenges should read this story! Be forewarned – it is not always light reading.
But, there IS most definitely a positive message!
UP FROM THE PAVEMENT: Triumph over Grief and Trauma through Medicine, Miracles, Love, Laughter, and FaithPaperback
What I find most surprising today is that the insiders and the elite have no idea what is percolating just beneath the surface. Okay, maybe their arrogance actually produces its own fog, so it should not come as a surprise that they are blinded. They do not look at the calendar, which, if one really looks, says “1788” on it. Something is close. Very close. Society is near the breaking point.
My own experience is that Hillary’s so-called Deplorables are actually the most reserved, most polite, and most honest demographic in the country. They are more informed, more self-reliant, and among other things, better armed. Regarding their arms, they are incredibly responsible, and not the source of the violence for which the implement, and not the person, is too often blamed. The Deplorables have the longest fuse. It is, however, a fuse.
Alt Left, on the other hand, are the Neo Fascists and Neo Neocons. It is Alt Left that thinks Free Speech means THEIR speech only. It is Alt Left that needs ‘safe spaces’ and wants to enforce thought crime.
It is Alt Left, and its media lapdog sites, that is heavily into censorship of ideas that diverge from their approved ideology. It is Alt Left that champions regime change and ratcheting up the rhetoric against Russia. It is Alt Left that believes it has an inherent right, even an obligation, to lie and obfuscate if it serves their greater purpose.
Perhaps most significant is that it is Alt Left who so quickly resorts to violence and vandalism when confronted with people and ideas with which it takes exception. Never has that been as clear as in this election cycle.
The Deplorables, however, are not possessed of infinite patience. Like a capacitor, there is a charge building, and at some point it will be released into the circuitry of society.
The media and other insiders believe themselves to be immune. That thought no doubt results from being immersed inside a cocoon where dissonant voices are not allowed. When the levee breaks, or the capacitor releases its charge, they are going to be gob smacked.
Precious few of them are anywhere near as immune as they believe themselves to be. Additionally, what they might think, or hope, is their support, their security, their safe space, doesn’t really exist.
Most of society’s guardians, whether they are law enforcement or military, are card-carrying members of the Deplorables.
France was similarly constructed in the late 1780s. The elite were isolated only in thought, not in reality. Their protection was of a Potemkin Village nature: not actually there, but merely a facade that gave them false comfort.
They paid dearly for their arrogance and ignorance.
History may not repeat, but it does rhyme. The calendar really does seem to say 1788, so 1789—and 1792–are not as far off as some would like to believe.
This is not a call to arms, but it is a call to reality. Ignore it at your
(I suspect most folks born after 1960 aren’t familiar with this song(?)
Old NFO came across THIS, which he labelled ‘an Interesting Find’ (from December 1917).
When contractors began work on four classrooms of old Emerson High School in Oklahoma City, they knew their work would lead to school betterment, but they never expected it would impact local history.
Looking to upgrade the rooms with new whiteboards and smartboards, the workers had to first remove the outdated chalkboards. But when they began to pull away those old boards, they made a startling discovery
Oklahoma City school officials aren’t just taken back by what’s written on the boards, but also by how beautifully it is written. Penmanship like this is clearly a lost art. One board reads, “I give my head, my heart, and my life to my God, and One nation indivisible with justice for all.”
And math too!
And though the boards’ style and subject matter might be unfamiliar to today’s younger folks, they certainly resonate with older generations. Principal Kishore told The Oklahoman what it was like to show her 85-year-old mother the boards: “She just stood there and cried. She said it was exactly like her classroom was when she was going to school.”
Simply amazing! It seems they must have done this over the holidays in Dec 1917, and never took the old boards down, just put the new ones up right over the old ones!!!

My comment to him was I suspect most of today’s college graduates would be unable to read (or write) the cursive, do the math and would poo-pooh the pledge to God and Country.
Scottsdale, AZ – August 20, 2015 – Finally, a women’s only online gun forum, sponsored by The Well Armed Woman (TWAW). With the numbers of women entering gun ownership soaring, there hasn’t yet been a comprehensive online community and gun forum created for women, a place where they can share and discuss all things gun – until now.
The Women’s Gun Zone offers extensive forums covering every possible topic important to women shooters of all ages. Women can ask questions and glean from other women shooters. News feeds, videos, photos, private groups where women can “gather” based on things they have in common, as well as places to share their own photos and videos are available. Popular forum topics include the following: Purchasing the Right Gun, Concealed Carry Holsters, Owning Guns with Children, Gun Laws, Pregnancy and Shooting, Defensive Shooting, Competitive Shooting, Senior Citizens, just to name a few. New topics will be regularly and can be added by users, so no question goes unanswered.
I know it’s a parallel universe, or the bizarro world when a liberal spew sheet such as Time actually allows such a radical op-ed in it’s pages. Of course, I suspect the following letters-to-the-editor were scathing indictments of an America, crime laden with youngsters poisoned by such criminal tutelage.
1) The times (Times), they are a changin’., and
2) I don’t care about the opinions of those who seek to deny the law-abiding their rights – unless, of course, they are in power!
